Letter From the Publisher

Dear Colleagues:

Thursday May 1, 2008 is Law Day. We encourage every ABA member to celebrate Law Day by taking some action to further the Rule of Law—and the ABA Web store has the resources and materials you'll need.

One great way to mark the day is to visit a classroom in a local school. The ABA has prepared lesson plans you can download for free, and take into any classroom to lead a conversation about the law. A great place to start is the "Conversations on the Constitution" site, which offers several easy-to-use lesson plans.

You might also want to bring copies of the Constitution to the students you'll be speaking to. The ABA offers multiple versions of the U.S. Constitution at various prices; find the one that suits you here.

For the younger ones, you'll be a big hit if you bring copies of the U.S. Supreme Court Coloring and Activity Book by Jenny B. Davis. A pack of crayons is included with every copy!

And finally, you might consider extending the Law Day activities beyond May 1, and sponsoring an outreach program in a school or across a district. The New Hampshire State Bar Association recently conducted a successful state-wide program centered around the young adult novel, Leapholes, by James Grippando, that featured state-wide essay contests and culminated in a visit by the author to the school of the winning student writer. Not only is a free classroom reading guide available, but the New Hampshire State Bar Association was kind enough to share a written report of this outreach program so that other lawyers and bar associations can replicate it. More information, about the book and the available resources, can be found here.

Our best wishes for a successful Law Day.

Sincerely,

Bryan Kay
