Representing the Transsexual and Transgender Client

Excerpted from Gay, Lesbian, and Transgender Clients: A Lawyer’s Guide
By Joan M. Burda

Many people are uncomfortable with transsexual and transgender persons. Most people are unfamiliar with anyone who is transgender or transsexual. This can and does result in discrimination and abuse directed toward the transsexual and transgender person. Transsexuals and transgender persons are a minority. Their lives and issues are frequently misunderstood and derided. Transgender clients deserve the best legal assistance available. The attorney’s reward is realizing the differences made in the life of one person – with the potential for precedent that can affect many more.

Remember that there is no need to go it alone. There are multiple organizations available to assist lawyers taking on these cases, such as the Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund, Transgender Law and Policy, and Gay and Lesbian Advocates and Defenders.
