About the eBook Version of Brand Integrity

For as long as consumers have been purchasing goods, criminals have engaged in "contraband" activities---efforts to obtain illegal profits from counterfeiting, evading taxes, or misusing distribution channels of consumer products. By many accounts, contraband activities result in billions in lost taxes to governments as well as billions in lost revenue and goodwill to businesses. Worse, contraband activities create risks to the public: counterfeit products or genuine products sold outside legitimate distribution channels and regulatory oversight---prescription drugs, shampoo, or baby formula, for example---can create obvious health risks to the public. And contraband has been called by some a "21st century goldmine for organized criminals" that supports organized crime and terrorist groups.

Brand Integrity: Strategies for Fighting Contraband and Counterfeit Goods examines the different types of modern contraband activities, including counterfeiting, diversion of genuine products, and sales in so-called "gray markets." It discusses why and how products have become a part of the contraband trade, and it explores the specific private and public enforcement strategies that may be used to combat the unlawful trafficking in consumer goods. Each chapter is written by counsel experienced in different forms of contraband and aims to cover the legal and practical considerations that can arise.
