Description

Because of the existing patchwork of protection in this country, same-sex couples face many legal uncertainties. While some states recognize relationships between same-sex couples, other states and the federal government may not. This seminar will focus on the ways that attorneys can assist their same-sex couples through estate planning, ownership of property, and tax planning, as well as how clients can protect their relationships with their children.

Our expert panelists with specifically focus on:

  • drafting clauses that are specific to the LGBT community versus using a standard form;
  • ethical issues in representing both partners;
  • protecting the rights of couples with children;
  • basic estate planning for non-taxable estates;
  • basic overview of federal gift and estate tax as of 2011;
  • estate planning for same-sex couples with wealth exceeding exemption amounts (state or federal);
  • partner relationships; and
  • last will and testament.
