Chapter 38 Computer Security for Solos - For many years, solo lawyers and small firms paid little or no attention to computer security issues. The common assumptions that some firms were too small to matter, flew below the radar, or have nothing of value to offer an intruder no longer apply. The Internet today has become a much more dangerous place. Attacks today often maliciously delete files and destroy data, and make computers inoperable. Today's spyware and keystroke loggers make it easy for your information--including passwords and credit card numbers--to be transmitted to third parties without your knowledge. To the extent that your computers hold client data, you also expose your client's information to compromise, and misuse.
This chapter outlines the basic steps every lawyer must take in today's Internet environment, as well as practical ways to adopt a reasonable approach to handling security issues. These include implementing the basic principles of computer security, the use of antivirus software and firewall software, using spyware detection software, adjusting browser security settings, updating applications and installing patches, guarding against theft, and more. Also discussed is the "human factor," which involves password use, dealing with spam and e-mail attachments, backing up data, education and training, and personal vigilance.
Become a more responsible computer user, and minimize your risks of failing to protect client confidentiality and your business and personal information by implementing this information today.
