About this Book

Since 1994, the Albany Law School has hosted an annual Kate Stoneman Day to celebrate the first woman admitted to the Bar in New York and the first woman to attend Albany Law School. This important book shares the inspiration, advice and experiences of pioneering women in the legal profession who have paved the way for generations behind them, including many yet to come.

The book features a fascinating history of Kate Stoneman written by Professor Katherine Katz, the Kate Stoneman Professor of Law, followed by edited chapters featuring speeches delivered at Kate Stoneman Day by leading women lawyers--many of them former Margaret Brent Honorees and active members of the ABA.

The contributors to this book read like a who's who of women lawyers. Among the distinguished contributors are:
  • Chief Judge Judith S. Kaye, NYS Court of Appeals

  • M. Catherine Richardson, First Women President of the NYS Bar Association

  • Judge Constance Baker Motely, 2nd Cir. Court of Appeals

  • Karen Mathis, President, ABA
