About the ABA Standards for Criminal Justice: Treatment of Prisoners

The Treatment of Prisoners Standards is an updated version of the previous Legal Status of Prisoners Standards. The "black letter" Standards were approved by the ABA House of Delegates in February 2010, and the commentary was approved by the Standards Committee in June 2011. Topics include intake and classification, conditions of confinement, rules of conduct and discipline, personal security, health care, personal dignity, rehabilitation and reintegration, grievances and access to courts, administration and staffing, and accountability and oversight.
