Veterans' courts are a fairly new development in the justice system but one that is burgeoning. Based on the community court model, these courts handle both misdemeanors and nonviolent felonies but more importantly, provide needed services (such as treatment for alcohol and substance abuse, or mental health services) for returning vets. The article highlights various courts across the country and how they operate, as well as the drawbacks and challenges for jurisdictions.
