Substance abuse exerts a heavy toll on society, raising challenges for both science and the law. Dr. Carlton Erickson from the University of Texas, Austin, a scientist, and addiction expert Gloria Danziger, Senior Fellow at the University of Baltimore, addresses the challenges their respective domains encounter in effectively addressing issues related to substance abuse.
In the past few decades, scientists have made impressive progress in understanding the neural pathways associated with substance dependence. These scientific findings are explained in layman's terms, and current treatment options for persons who are addicted, including the prospects for success, are also presented.
As science progresses in its understanding of substance abuse and its treatment, the justice system struggles with decisions regarding the best methods for dealing with crimes related to substance dependence. Prof. Danziger discusses a variety of state and federal practices that address adult and juvenile substance abusers, covering sanctions and the law's attempts to promote recovery, for example, through the use of special drug courts.
Moderator: Michael J. Saks, Ph.D. Speakers: Gloria Danziger, J.D. and Carlton Erickson, Ph.D.
