With the baby boom, we have observed a greater number of individuals joining the profession. These boomers are choosing longer careers than their predecessors; yet the estimates of individuals with mental illness in general, Alzheimer's Disease and other dementias both before and after retirement age are on the rise. The ABA has acknowledged that the practice is not prepared for protecting the dignity of senior lawyers in this situation, or to address the ethical, social, and political issues facing attorneys with the symptoms attendant to such illness.
Similar issues face attorneys with mental illness, especially severe mental illness. However, mental illness can affect attorneys of any age. Law firms and other practices are no better prepared to manage the symptoms and the stigma associated with such diagnoses.
This video download presentation will address the medical and psychological issues faced by attorneys with dementia or mental illness. In addition, professional issues that arise for attorneys with mental illness will be addressed. Finally, an attorney with mental illness will speak about his experiences on the front lines.
