Description

In the wake of Google+'s release, a number of third parties have developed tools that allow users to extract and export social data from Facebook and reconstruct their Facebook friends lists on Google+.

This program will provide an overview of various legal issues relating to data extraction tools, which are at the center of the increasingly competitive social networking market. Our panelists will examine the legality of such tools under several common law and statutory theories, including trespass to chattels; the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act and its California state law corollary, the California Comprehensive Computer Data Access Act; the CAN-SPAM Act; and copyright infringement. Our panelists will also explore the legality of social networking websites' technological disabling of data extraction tools that allow users to export data to competing websites.
