Can "junk" science be good evidence? A much-anticipated report from the National Academy of Sciences, Strengthening Forensic Science in the United States: A Path Forward, has criticized forensic science as "badly fragmented."

Surveying the current status of the field (including the use of DNA evidence, fingerprint and toolmark analysis, hair analysis, bite-marks, "voice printing," handwriting analysis, lie detection, forensic dentistry, fire investigation, and other disciplines), the NAS report makes the case for extensive, wide-ranging reforms--literally from the crime scene to the courtroom-- in civil as well as criminal cases.
