Message from the Chair, Charles E. McCallum

Message from the Chair
"To promote the full and equal participation in the legal profession by minorities, women, persons with disabilities, and persons of differing sexual orientation and gender identity."

Goal IX of the American Bar Association

I am proud to report that our Section has for the tenth consecutive year been named to the Goal IX Honor Roll by the ABA Commission on Racial and Ethnic Diversity in the Profession. This honor reflects the Section's commitment to diversity, led by Diversity Committee Co-Chairs Frances Gauthier and Dennis Lehr, as evidenced by the Section's persistent pursuit of diversity in its leadership, on its CLE panels and by such outreach programs as Business Law Fellows, Ambassadors, Diplomats, CLEO Fellow scholarships, and the Business Law Diversity Clerkship Program.

I cannot describe the Section's outstanding record better than the ABA Commission did in its report:
  • "Business Law was one of the first, if not the first, ABA entity to develop a diversity plan. Since then, many other Sections, Divisions and Forums have followed suit. Business Law, however, keeps its Diversity Plan current by periodically reviewing it and updating it when needed. . . . Business Law makes sure that its Diversity Plan is living, breathing and current. In Business Law, diversity is not simply a fad, or the current leadership's initiative, or this year's favorite style. Day in and day out, this Section places a value on diversity that it has integrated into the very essence of the Section's culture. Diversity initiatives are planned so that they can be built upon and grow. Business Law's outreach efforts encompass not only race and ethnicity but gender, disabilities, sexual orientation and gender identity. Kudos to Business Law for its ongoing diversity efforts. The Section's current and former . . . leaders, as well as the Section's staff, for the past ten years deserve special recognition for their effective and inspirational leadership in diversity."

Meetings Update

Registrations are flooding in for the Spring Meeting in Dallas, April 10-12. Our committees are putting on more than 80 outstanding CLE programs over a broad range of topics. We are expecting record attendance. If you have not done so, take a moment to review the program and register today.

We are also seeing keen interest in our Global Business Law Conference, May 29-30, 2008 in Frankfurt, Germany. General information is currently available online and an electronic program brochure with details on the almost 20 CLE programs and other Conference highlights will be mailed later this month. Please pass this information on to your colleagues and friends, especially those practicing (private practice or in-house) in Europe. We invite those who are not already members of the Section to go to our meeting website and request that a copy of the brochure be sent to them.

The goal of the Business Law Fellows, Ambassadors and Diplomat Programs is to increase the participation of young lawyers, lawyers of color and lawyers with disabilities in Section activities. The Section is committed to investing dollars in these individuals who are expected to participate actively in the substantive work of the Section and to grow into future leadership positions within the Section. The Program is designed not only to develop future leaders of the Section but also to enhance the image of the Section among members of the Young Lawyers Division, national bars of color, and national organizations of disabilities in order to attract these individuals into Section membership. The Section will select five Fellows, five Ambassadors and one Diplomat and will fund their expenses to participate in Section activities for two years. Applications are due July 7, 2008.
