TIPS Fall Meeting 2013

The Task Force enjoyed warmer than usual weather in Minneapolis, MN for the TIPS Fall Meeting.  We hosted a successful local member outreach event on Friday night and held a successful business meeting on Saturday.  The committee finalized plans for the year long Anatomy of ADR Practice Series it will help host with the ABA YLD and brainstormed ideas for young lawyer outreach for the upcoming year.

TIPS Fall Meeting

The ABA TIPS Task Force on Outreach to Young Lawyers enjoyed the weather, food and beautiful scenery of the TIPS 2012 Fall Meeting in Palm Springs, California. The location of this meeting did not lend itself to outreach efforts to local lawyers, but the focus of the meeting for the Task Force was to plan activities that, for the next two years, will recruit and retain new lawyers to TIPS. The Task Force met on Saturday, October 13, 2012 from 10:30 -12:00 p.m. Task Force members were assigned to or volunteered for ABA YLD substantive committees. Members will reach out to these committees before each TIPS meeting and ask the if we can help with CLEs, content for their website, articles, etc. The Task Force discussed ways to enhance current outreach efforts to young and new plaintiff, in-house and corporate counsel. We decided to look into whether offering CE for in-house and corporate counsel and joining with the state Associations for Justice to reach out to plaintiff's counsel during local meetings can fulfill this goal. In an effort to broaden the tangible content items the Task Force will produce, the group decided to try a test "Day in the Life" web blog, pod cast or webinar that will eventually offer a glimpse into the life of an associate or young lawyer working in insurance defense, plaintiff, corporate/in-house and general/solo. Rick Vanderslice has already prepared something similar and offered to find volunteers for the general practice/solo version. Stay tuned for details on outreach to local young lawyers at the Mid-year Meeting in Dallas. See you in Dallas.

TIPS / ABA Annual Meeting

The ABA Annual Meeting was a huge success for the Task Force. Beginning on Thursday, August 2, 2012, the Task Force, in conjunction with the Young Lawyers Division, conducted a Welcome Reception at Moe's Cantina, a popular night spot. The event was well attended, with estimates in the range of 200 to 300 people present. On Friday, the Task Force conducted its business meeting during which time discussions were held regarding the continued use and employment of technology, as well as the transition of leadership from Chuck Eppolito to Michael Vercher. While Chuck will be missed, we are certain that Mike Vercher will carry the torch effectively. A Task Force Happy Hour was conducted following the meeting. Several members of the Task Force voluntarily dined in small groups and ultimately met for cocktails at Gibsons Bar & Steakhouse. The Task Force's next meeting will be held during the TIPS Fall Leadership Meeting to be held at the La Quinta Resort and Club in La Quinta, California over the course of October 11-15, 2012. The Task Force's business meeting is currently scheduled for 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, October 13, 2012. We are hopeful for a well-attended meeting. If you are planning to attend and have questions, comments, suggestions, or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact Michael Vercher at (205) 250-6621.

TIPS Spring Leadership Meeting

The Taskforce met in Charleston, South Carolina, on Saturday, May 19, 2012. Prior to the business meeting, the Taskforce held a networking reception sponsored by the McNair Law Firm, P.A., a local firm in Charleston. The reception was held at Leaf Restaurant and was well attended by South Carolina and Charleston Young Lawyers, including the Chair of the South Carolina Young Lawyers Association.

Also discussed at the meeting was the Taskforce-sponsored CLE on Direct Examination and Witness Preparation for the Young Lawyers Division of the ABA at the Spring Conference in Nashville, Tennessee. David Deehl was able to step in at the last minute request of the Young Lawyers. Also discussed were the ongoing efforts of the Taskforce in its social networking presence on Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn social media sites.

The Taskforce’s next meeting will be Friday, August 3, 2012, in Chicago, Illinois, at the ABA Annual Meeting. The Taskforce will be hosting Young Lawyers Division Welcome Reception again on Thursday, August 2.

ABA Midyear Meeting

The Task Force met in New Orleans, LA between February 3 - 7, 2012. Throughout the weekend, Task Force members staffed the inaugural TIPS iCafe, which demonstrated the benefits of a social media presence at TIPS meetings.

On February 3rd, the Task Force hosted the YLD Welcome Reception at the Old Absinthe House on Bourbon Street. More than 100 lawyers attended, including members of the NOBA YLS and the YLD. Task Force members were in attendance in force, wearing their bright blue shirts and providing information about TIPS.

On February 4th, the Task Force held its business meeting at the New Orleans Marriott. Among other things, the Task Force described the enormous success of the iCafe and the other social media efforts being spearheaded by the Task Force. TIPS senior leadership view the Task Force's efforts as a model for the entire Section.

Later that evening, members of the Task Force enjoyed dinner at one of the most famous restaurants in New Orleans -- Mr. B's. Immediately, afterward, this group along with several other Task Force Members went on a ghost and cocktail tour of the French Quarter and finished its tour at Pat O'Brian's--the home of the Hurricane.

Overall, it was a fun and productive meeting where a lot of young lawyers were able to network and learn about the great work of the Task Force.  See you in Charleston, SC!

TIPS Fall Leadership Meeting and Joint Meeting with Young Lawyers Division (YLD)

The Task Force on Outreach to Young Lawyers met in Seattle, WA between October 12 - 16, 2011. During its business meeting, a number of issues were discussed including current and future outreach efforts and development of programs of interest to young lawyers.

One of the most exciting new projects involves the Task Force appointing liaisons or representatives on the various YLD committees which have a nexus to TIPS. This will allow even greater communication between TIPS and the YLD, and will further support the benefits TIPS can offer to young lawyers. We are very excited to get this off the ground this fall. In addition, the Task Force sponsored two successful networking events in Toronto.

The first was the Thursday night YLD Welcome Reception at Brassaii Restaurant and Lounge. The Task Force was out in its signature blue TIPS shirts and was able to meet many young attorneys from throughout the United States (and even Canada) and introduce them to TIPS and the ABA.

The second event was held at the Sheraton Toronto Centre Hotel on Friday evening, and participation was great with many young attorneys able to come out and meet the Task Force and network. With the Annual Meeting behind us, the Task Force is very excited about the upcoming year, starting with the TIPS and YLD Fall Leadership Conferences taking place in Seattle, October 13-16, 2011.
