Membership Committee


Mission Statement




The mission of the Membership Committee is to be responsible for promoting, encouraging, facilitating and retaining Section membership.

Committee Facts

  • Approximately 125 members consisting of Director representatives from the Section's legal subject matter committees and other volunteer members
  • The Committee meets monthly via telephone conferences and meets in-person at the Section's Spring Meeting and during the ABA's Annual Meeting
  • Committee recruiting and retention activities are focused in several areas:
  • Persons not yet members of the ABA through activities such as the ABA's Member- Get-A-Member campaign, persons who have purchased Section publications or CLE, and members of adjacency groups
  • Current ABA members who are not yet Section members such as those who have indicated a practice area of concentration in business law, have purchased Section publications or CLE, and eligible persons located in the geographic area of a Section meeting
  • Underrepresented groups through outreach to members of those groups and through the activities of other Section programs such as the Business Law Ambassadors, Business Law Diplomats, and Minority Clerkship programs
  • Young lawyers and law students through targeted presentations to law student groups, the Section's Spring Meeting Institute for the Young Business Lawyer, and the Section's Business Law Fellows program
  • Retention activities focused on promoting the Section's publications, CLE and other member benefits, encouraging membership and participation in the Section's subject matter committees, and encouraging networking opportunities for Section members

Membership Committee Meetings

The Membership Committee will be meeting from 3:00 - 4:30 p.m. Central on Thursday, September 11, at the 2014 Business Law Section Annual Meeting in Chicago. We'll be in the Wrigley Room, Bronze Level, West Tower in the Hyatt Regency Chicago. The agenda is can be found here. I will be following up tomorrow with the materials.
