Young Lawyers Committee

Message From the Co-Chairs

Welcome to the GPSolo Division's Young Lawyers Committee!

The YL Committee recently hosted a meeting during the 9th Annual GPSolo National Solo & Small Firm Conference in San Antonio, Texas, where we discussed the upcoming Brown Bag Session, Depositions: Preparing, Taking and Defending, to be held on Wednesday, January 14, 2015, 12:00 to 1:00 P.M. Central Time. Free to all GPSolo members. Presenters will discuss how to organize and plan for a deposition; rules and standards of a depositions and deposition cross-examination.

YL Committee is also co-sponsoring a Teleconference Program with The Individual Rights & Responsibilities Committee of the Young Lawyers Division, January 24, 2015 at 12 noon (Eastern) concerning current issues in immigration law. With the recent passage of the DREAM Act and the ongoing surge of unaccompanied minor deportation proceedings, this teleconference will offer timely advice and insights to young attorneys. An exceptional panel of immigration attorneys will offer a primer on the DREAM Act, share lessons learned in unaccompanied minor proceedings, and offer advice about best practices and successful strategies.

During the ABA’s Midyear Meeting in Houston, Texas, GPSolo’ s very own 2014-2015 Young Lawyers Fellow, Sahmra Stevenson-Smith will be presenting “Eating Healthy While Eating Out” on Friday, February 6, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. The program is sponsored by Fit to Practice Team.

We are also pleased to announce the sponsorship of two Young Lawyer Fellowships in the Division during the 2015-2016 bar year. GPSolo is committed to increasing the participation of young lawyers in Division activities. This program will provide young lawyers the opportunity to become actively and integrally involved in the Division’s meetings and committees. Applications and nominations for both Diversity and Young Lawyer fellowships must be received by March 31, 2015. Successful applicants will be notified in early May 2015.

The Young Lawyers Committee provides a perfect opportunity to participate in events, access information of interest to young lawyers, and meet other members of the Division. We look forward to working with you all in 2015.

Sincerely,

Amanda McNeil (amanda.mcneil.51@gmail.com) and Sopi Mitil (smitil@aol.com)

Service Opportunities

KIND - Kids In Need of Defense http://www.americanbar.org/groups/gpsolo/initiatives/kind.html

The ABA Solo, Small Firm and General Practice Division has partnered with Kids in Need of Defense (KIND) to enable volunteer attorneys to assist unaccompanied children - ranging from as young as three years old to eighteen years old - who otherwise may be forced to represent themselves in immigration court proceedings. If you are willing to provide pro bono services for a vulnerable child to ensure that the child does not face removal proceedings alone or thinking about expanding your practice into the area of immigration the sessions below are for you!

To volunteer for a case with KIND please visit http://supportkind.org/volunteer-form

“If you do not live or work near one of the cities with a KIND project, we still need your help and the training you received through the materials on this page and/or the live KIND training can be applied to programs in your state. Please go to the www.immigrationadvocates.org website, and click on “probono resources” followed by “volunteer guide” for a map listing immigration pro bono projects in your state.”

"101 Series" for Young Lawyers

The ABA Young Lawyers Division’s member-service project, the “the 101 Series”, provides short articles and checklists on how-to topics for young lawyers. The GPSolo Young Lawyers Committee has highlighted some of the most helpful articles for young lawyers who are general practitioners or practice alone or in a small firm. Public Service Tolerance Through Education Initiative Welcome to School: Helping Kids Belong The headlines continue concerning hate motivated attacks against individuals in our communities. As our schoolyards and workplaces continue to become a mosaic of cultures, the need for teaching tolerance remains a timely and important undertaking. You can be an instrumental part of teaching tolerance through education by participating in the Solo, Small Firm and General Practice Division's national public service project.
