Latin American & Caribbean Committee

Message From The Co-Chairs

On behalf of our leadership team, welcome to the Committee homepage of the Latin American & Caribbean Committee!

We hope that you will find the content of this page useful. It includes past editions of our newsletters, program materials from past Committee programs, Year-in-Review articles and references to websites which we consider useful and practical for our daily work in Latin American & Caribbean countries.

If you are not a member of the Section of International Law yet, we strongly encourage you to join. There is no need to be a U.S.-qualified lawyer. More than 10% of the Section members are lawyers licensed to practice in jurisdictions other than the United States. If you are already a member of the Section but you are not a member of the Latin American & Caribbean Committee, please consider joining.

The Committee focuses on the most diverse relevant issues that are present in the everyday legal-life of lawyers, judges, regulators and legislators practicing and working in or with Latin America & Caribbean countries, providing them an updated source of information and a unique opportunity for networking with other colleagues.

Members of the committee truly have the opportunity to help set the committee's direction, focus and agenda. We welcome all those who practice in this field or are otherwise interested in what is one of the most important emerging marketplaces for the practice of law and the development of business in the world. If you wish to join the committee, sign up online using the link to the right.Practitioners, judges, regulators and legislators in many countries will find a very active forum to become acquainted with and knowledgeable about the latest legal developments in the countries of the Latin American & Caribbean Region. The committee will provide a unique forum for examining and discussing these issues from diverse standpoints (e.g. law practice, business-oriented, comparative approach, legislative and regulatory), on a country-specific, regional, global and always issue-focused basis.

We are available to address any questions you may have or to discuss with you any aspect of the committee that you may deem necessary. Please, feel free to contact either of the Co-Chairs. We look forward to working with you in the development, growth and work of the Committee.

November 2014 Monthly Call Summary

November 7, 2014
Latin America and Caribbean Committee
November Monthly Call Summary - November 7, 2014

Dear Committee Members:

Eduardo and I would like to again thank those of you who participated in our second monthly call. It was great to hear about your experiences at this year’s October meeting in Buenos Aires. As we shared your experiences at the meeting, it seems certain themes continued to emerge from our last call together which included: (i) cross border trade and the related compliance issues (how to approach compliance from a multi-State perspective); (ii) energy policy and balancing the environmental consequences of increasing technological developments in production, i.e. fracking (we also contemplated regional and global economic issues associated with increasing volatility in the price of oil); and (iii) the potential need for regional organizations to address issues confronting the States of Latin America in order to remove local politics from the formulation of responsible policies (i.e., energy production and economic matters common throughout the region).

Insofar as tangible progress in respect of our Committee activities, I am pleased to report that we now have a Committee webpage manager-Sergio Moreno. Sergio will now assist the Committee with posting relevant regional developments, our Committee newsletter and upcoming programs and events involving our Committee to our webpage. Sergio-many thanks for taking this important task on for our Committee. Second, we also discussed the possibility of a three part program regarding Energy which would be co-sponsored by the Section’s Energy Committee; we will report out details of this program and how we plan to conduct (either in-person or via web/teleconference) in the days ahead. With respect to our Committee newsletter, we plan to have our first issue of the year out before the end of the year and we thank in advance all of you who have already volunteered to contribute to this year’s issue. Also, we discussed the year-in-review and the importance of contributing brief articles on timely topics affecting the region.

Again, we thank you all who attended this past week’s meeting and please do not hesitate to reach out to myself or Eduardo directly if you have any questions regarding any of our Committee’s activities or how you might be able to get involved in them.

Best,

Richard Walsh, Co-Chair
Eduardo Benavides, Co-Chair
