Message From The Chair

A New Name and a New Strategic Plan

We are now officially the Professional Liability Insurance Committee. It’s still the same great committee with the same mission. This new name helps distinguish us from other committees in the ABA. It also helps communicate a focus on insurance and risk management issues. A sub-committee chaired by Scott Slater and including Ari Magedoff, Michael Brown, Greg Monaco, and Teresa Milano put a lot of thought into this and successfully shepherded the proposal through the section’s leadership.

This new name is part of our new strategic plan. A major part of our strategic plan is to hold regional workshops, sponsored by local law firms. These regional workshops will take CLE programming directly to our members and will help us attract new members. We will aim to increase diversity by partnering with minority bar organizations and will also aim to make programming more available to in-house personnel. The first workshop will take place in New York City in the fall of 2016.

We have not abandoned our past activities. We will continue to offer publishing opportunities on-line, in our newsletter, and through the TIPS law journal. Along with the Insurance Coverage Litigation Committee, we will co-sponsor a webinar on the insured vs. insured exclusion. And thanks to some good work from Peter Biging, TIPS section selected our CLE program on defending the indefensible case for inclusion in its section programming at the ABA annual meeting in August.

Thanks to everyone who helped draft our strategic plan. And thanks to everyone who is a part of this committee. We have a bright future ahead of us.
