Standing Committee on Law Students

Who We Are

A Message from the Co-Chairs of the Standing Committee on Law Students

In recent years, the Tort Trial & Insurance Practice Section (TIPS) of the American Bar Association (ABA) has developed cutting-edge networking, social, and educational opportunities for law students all across the country. At a time when many law students face challenges in forging their way to their first job in the legal field, the Standing Committee on Law Students (SCOLS) strives to provide pathways to a successful legal career.

SCOLS members include attorneys and law students who share an interest in developing and promoting opportunities for law students to succeed in their studies and careers.

Law student members of TIPS gain access to numerous programs and opportunities that can open doors to those entering the legal workforce. For example, TIPS law student members often:

  • Publish articles in ABA/TIPS newsletters;
  • Take on leadership positions on various TIPS committees;
  • Attend meetings and social events with attorneys practicing all across the country;
  • Volunteer in public service events alongside TIPS attorneys; and
  • Organize TIPS outreach events at law schools nationwide.

There are over thirty General Committees within TIPS, covering topics such as Products Liability, Animal Law, Toxic Torts and Environmental Law, International Law, Trial Techniques, and more. These General Committees allow law students with a variety of interests to gain more in-depth knowledge in a substantive area of law, and to work one-on-one with practitioners in those areas of law. Every year, a Law Student Vice Chair is appointed to each General Committee to serve as a leader on the committee and bring a law students’ perspective while working with attorneys to develop publications, CLE programs, and other activities.
