Michael B. Gerrard

Michael B. Gerrard is a partner in Arnold & Porter LLP, where he heads the New York office. He has practiced environmental law in New York since 1979, concentrating in litigation, project development, regulatory compliance counseling, and transactions. He has tried numerous cases and argued many appeals in the federal and state courts and administrative tribunals, and has handled the environmental aspects of many transactions and development projects.

Mr. Gerrard was the 2004-2005 Chair of the American Bar Association's 10,000-member Section of Environment, Energy, and Resources. He has chaired the Executive Committee of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York and the Environmental Law Section of the New York State Bar Association, and has taught environmental law as an adjunct professor at Columbia Law School and the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies.

Mr. Gerrard is the author or editor of seven books, two of which were named Best Law Book of the Year: Environmental Law Practice Guide (12 volumes) and Brownfields Law and Practice (4 volumes). His books for the ABA are Global Climate Change and U.S. Law; The Law of Environmental Justice (with Sheila R. Foster); and Amending CERLCA (with Joel Gross).

In addition to his domestic practice, Mr. Gerrard has advised numerous foreign investors on the environmental aspects of U.S. properties, and he has handled several cases concerning transboundary and marine pollution. He has lectured on environmental law in Great Britain, France, Canada, and China, as well as throughout the United States.

Legal Media Group's Guide to the World's Leading Environment Lawyers 2005, based on 4,000 questionnaires, reported that Mr. Gerrard "received more personal nominations for this guide than any other lawyer in the world." He has also been rated by Chambers USA: America's Leading Lawyers for Business, and Who's Who Legal as the leading environmental lawyer in New York, and he has been recognized in The Best Lawyers in America® 2007 for Environmental Law, The LawDragon 500, and Corporate Board Member Magazine.

Mr. Gerrard received his B.A. from Columbia in 1972 and his J.D. from New York University in 1978.
