Committees Day

In cooperation with the ABA Section of Science & Technology Law

A number of Section of Intellectual Property Law committees will be holding committee meetings on Wednesday, April 1 – Committees Day. This is a great opportunity for members of those committees to get together and interact face to face as they discuss the issues of their committee and plan strategies for committee activities. This year, certain committee will be offering CLE roundtables, with CLE credit available, to anyone who would like to attend.

These meetings are also a great opportunity for anyone interested in joining one of those committees to meet the committee chairs and other members. New members of committees are always welcome. Full information on committee meetings, CLE roundtables and schedules are available on the Section website.

The committee will review significant developments in the laws related to e-commerce and databases, including efforts to implement the UN Ecommerce Convention for international transactions.

Committee 201 – Federal Trademark Legislation

The Trademark Legislation Committee will discuss at length the status of the four initiatives that they are working on this year.

Committee 601- Trial and Appellate Rules and Procedure

The committee meeting will focus on the substance, structure, analysis, and adoption of draft Model Patent Local Rules.

This program features a diverse panel of speakers from the public and private sectors, each of whom has chosen a different career path in IP law. The meeting will consist of reviewing the proposals put forth by the Litigation Prerequisite Working Group, as well as brainstorming ideas for upcoming projects and programming and, of course, networking.

The Young Lawyers Committee is focused on the special challenges of and opportunities for young lawyers in, or interested in, the fields of law of the Section, including becoming integrated fully into the activities of the Section.  Join the meeting to learn about how you can become more actively involved in the programs, publications and development of policy within the Section of Intellectual Property Law.

Committee 701- Computer Software Technology

The committee will be co-hosting a panel discussion during the IP Law Conference that will include discussion of the In Re Bilski case.  During the committee meeting, they will discuss this case, their part in the presentation, and determine a way forward for the committee in this area, including whether a policy statement is warranted.  They will also hear updates from the other subcommittees and revisit the approach for the year.
This will be a great opportunity to network with other committee members.

CLE Roundtable discussion on licensing issues arising from the use of software in conjunction with "cloud computing" initiatives and the related offering of software as a web-based service.  The discussion also may address recent software licensing related case law developments and the committee's ongoing work on open source software issues.

Committee 711- Online Security and E-Privacy - CLE ROUNDTABLE

The Online Security and Electronic Privacy will explore the general state of digital privacy and security on the Internet, and will specifically focus on emerging issues presented by recent judicial decisions, regulatory enforcement, and legislation (such as the data transmission laws recently passed in Nevada and Massachusetts).  Additionally, other committee and subcommittee activities will be discussed, such as the content of the newsletter cosponsored by the International Law section and any pending resolutions.

Committee 355- Special Committee on Copyrights and New Technology

This committee is charged with monitoring the impact of new technologies on copyright law, including tracking court opinions and other developments related to digital rights management and other online security measures, data compression and delivery technologies, and online image, text, and audio recognition technologies. The meeting will provide an opportunity to discuss committee initiatives and for face-to-face networking among committee members.

Special Guest - Judge Michael Fleming, will give a State of the Board presentation.

Committee 103 is active in studying new rule proposals from the Patent Office.  New rules concerning appeals were recently approved by the Office, but have not yet taken effect.  Committee 103 is inviting representatives from the Office to discuss the new rules, how they will be applied, and common errors to avoid when filing an appeal to the Board from an examiner's final rejection or from an ALJ decision.
