Beyond the City Highlights
8:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. / Ticket price: $45
This tour is a natural follow up to The Sights and Sounds of San Francisco Tour, the prior tour being a basic primer on San Francisco, and this tour designed for visitors who have seen the basic sites of the city and want to stray from the beaten path. The first stop will be the Cable Car Barn and Museum. Originally constructed in 1887, the barn was rebuilt after the 1906 earthquake and again in 1984. Guests will be able to view the original cable cars on display, including one that made its original journey up Clay Street Hill in 1873. Guests will then proceed to Fort Point, beneath the southern arch of the Golden Gate Bridge. The fort was built between 1853 and 1861 to guard the entrance to the Bay from marauders. The last two stops will be in the Mission District. The first stop will be to view the collection of community murals along Balmy Alley created by artists in the 1970s. The other stop will be to the original Mission Dolores, dating back to the founding of the first settlement in 1776.

Walk Across the Golden Gate Bridge
9:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon / Ticket price: $30
Walking across the Golden Gate Bridge is pure exhilaration, especially in the morning. The walk itself is only about one mile from one side to the other (1.22 miles), but well worth the experience because every point on the bridge affords its own unique spectacular view of San Francisco and the surrounding Bay area from 246 feet up in the air above the waters of San Francisco Bay. Stand at the base of the towers and marvel at their sheer height, as well as the beauty of the art deco design detail. The tour guide will lead the way, sharing structural and anecdotal information about the bridge, and answering questions guests may have. Recommended Attire: Weather can be windy and cool. Leave Your Heart
in San Francisco |
|
With truly something for everyone, San Francisco has earned the “World’s Favorite City” title time and time again. It boasts world-class theater, museums and performing arts, historic attractions and scenic vistas. With over 5,000 restaurants from which to choose, “the City by the Bay” offers an array of delicious food to please any palate.
Alcatraz
The fog-shrouded island in the middle of the Bay was once a maximum-security federal penitentiary that housed some of the most notorious criminals. Today “The Rock” is a national park accessible by ferry boat.
Cable Cars
The cable car, America’s only moving national historic landmark, invented in 1873, still climbs “halfway to the stars” up the city’s impossibly steep slopes.
Chinatown
Renowned Chinatown, with its famous Chinatown gate,
invites visitors to step into a world of herb shops, hanging roast ducks, and incense-laden temples.
Coit Tower
Perhaps one of the most visible, but least visited treasures of San Francisco, this cylindrical 250-foot tall monument atop Telegraph Hill offers a spectacular panoramic view of the city, as well as 1930’s-era murals of life in San Francisco.
Ghirardelli Square
Formerly a chocolate factory owned by renowned chocolatier Domingo Ghirardelli. Today the Square delights visitors and locals alike with its unique mix of specialty stores, galleries and restaurants.
North Beach
One of San Francisco’s oldest and most vibrant neighborhoods. Affectionately known as Little Italy, it boasts some of the city’s most tempting Italian restaurants.
Presidio
Founded in 1776, the Presidio served as a military garrison under the flags of Spain, Mexico and the United States. It was transferred to the National Park Service in 1994.
Museums
There seems to be no end of museums in the city. Some of the more notable ones include the California Academy of Sciences; the Palace of the Legion of Honor, featuring the City’s collection of European Art; the Exploratorium, a hands-on science museum; and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
The Golden Gate Bridge
This magnificent span is perhaps San Francisco’s most famous and most beloved landmark. It stands as one of the seven wonders of the modern world. |
