The Palace Hotel
This year’s Summer IPL Conference is at The Palace
Hotel in San Francisco. Set in the heart of downtown San Francisco,
the Palace Hotel offers an array of rooms elegantly appointed with
an ideal balance of antiques and contemporary amenities.
The
Sheraton Palace is not only a hotel; it is a historical landmark.
It opened in 1875 as the world’s largest and most luxurious
hotel. The Palace survived the Great Earthquake of 1906, but was
gutted by the subsequent fire. It was razed and the structure you
see today was rebuilt in 1909 on the site of the original hotel.
The Palace was completely renovated and reopened in 1991 to much
critical and public acclaim.
The Palace has been the hotel of choice for the country’s
industrial titans (Rockefeller, Morgan, Carnegie, Pullman, Huntington,
and Vanderbilt); Presidents Woodrow Wilson, Warren G. Harding (who
died at the Palace on August 2, 1923), and Franklin Roosevelt; and
countless heads of state from other nations. The official banquet
for the opening of the United Nations in 1945 took place in the
Garden Court.
Make your reservation online
at the discounted Conference rate by Monday, May 30, 2005. Do it
today before the room block fills up!
Section Office,
Registration, and Hospitality Area
The Section will maintain a Registration and Hospitality area from
Wednesday, June 22 through Saturday, June 25 in the Gold Ballroom
and Grand Ballroom Foyer area.
The Section Staff on site at the registration desk will handle questions

may be left with Section Staff for meeting registrants during meeting

Section Business
Session Debates
The Business Session at the 2005 Summer IPL Conference will be held
on Thursday, June 23, 2005, from 1:30 - 5:00 p.m. CLE credit will
be available for those attending the Business Session.
Debates on cutting edge and often controversial issues play a central
role at the Section’s annual Business Session. The Section
sets its positions on policy issues at this session. The Section’s
position on issues ranging from “first to file” versus
“first to invent,” trade dress protection for product
configurations and file downloading have been debated and voted
upon at past Sessions. This is YOUR chance to hear top IP attorneys
debate the issues of the day and to participate in this OPEN FORUM
setting. A unique feature of the Section’s Annual meeting,
not found at any other intellectual property law conference, the
annual Business Session of the Section features debate on the resolutions
presented by the Section’s Committees. Continuing Legal Education
credit will be available.
Weather and Dress
San Francisco is famous for its year-round temperate climate, and
its fog rolling in off the bay. In June the daytime temperatures
are warm (typically in the upper 60’s), but not hot and not
humid. Chilling morning and evening fog is common during summer
months, with typical evening temperatures in the lower to mid-50’s.
Bring a sweater or a light-weight jacket. You may encounter cool
temperatures during a day on the bay, at Alcatraz or walking the
bridge. Women should pack a blazer or dressy coat for a night out.
Men will be comfortable in a sports jacket and long pants. Note:
If you intend to travel to neighboring counties north (Marin or
Napa) or south (San Jose to Santa Cruz), pack typical summer clothing
such as shorts and T-shirts.
Conference Attire
Generally business dress will be the appropriate attire throughout
the conference, with casual dress in order for tours and tournaments,
as well as the Wednesday evening tailgate party and baseball game.
