ILEX Briefing Trip to São Paulo, Brazil and Lima, Peru

April 26-30, 2009

The International Legal Exchange (ILEX) Program of the ABA Section of International Law organized a Briefing Trip to Brazil and Peru in April 2009. The trip was led by ABA SIL Chair Aaron Schildhaus and included visits to numerous institutions in São Paulo and Lima.

The delegation had the opportunity to meet with numerous Brazilian and Peruvian leaders, including several justices of the Supreme Court of São Paulo and the Supreme Court of Peru. Delegation members additionally met with the U.S. Consul General in Sao Paulo and the President of the Ordem dos Advogados do Brasil Seção de São Paulo, and in Peru interacted with the Attorney General, the Minister of Justice, and the President of the Constitutional Tribunal.

The ILEX Brazil and Peru trip was intended to:

  • Establish a framework foregoing mutual contacts, cooperation and friendship between the lawyers of Brazil and Peru, and members of ABA International;
  • Establish a framework for ongoing mutual contacts and cooperation between Brazilian and Peruvian legal institutions — including the judiciary, law schools, and relevant ministries - and ABA International;
  • Exchange ideas and information regarding issues of mutual interest and concern, including international business, human rights and the rule of law;
  • Interact with members of the local and international legal community;
  • Meet with current members and associate members of the ABA who are based in Brazil and Peru; and
  • Lay the foundation for present and future joint events.

Rule of Law Panel Series

On April 16th, 2010, the ABA-UNDP International Legal Resource Center (ILRC) co-hosted a program with the International Finance Corporation (World Bank Group), Rule of Law-Technical Legal Assistance Board, and the Law Society of England and Wales, entitled “Cutting Red Tape and Unlocking Blocked Assets: ADR as a Strategic Vehicle in Developing Countries.” For panel details, click here.
