January 4-10, 2009
The International Legal Exchange (ILEX) Program of the ABA Section of International Law organized a Briefing Trip to India in January 2009. The trip was led by ABA SIL Chair Aaron Schildhaus and preceded ABA International’s Asia Regional Meeting in New Delhi.
The delegation had the opportunity to become acquainted with legal, political and business leaders throughout India, meeting with the Minister for Law and Justice, the Chief Justice of India and the Minister of State for Industries. The trip included visits to the Bombay Stock Exchange, the Securities and Exchange Board of India, the Bombay High Court and the Bangalore Mediation Centre. Through such meetings and tours in Mumbai, Bangalore and New Delhi, delegation members sought to achieve the following objectives:
Establish a framework for ongoing mutual contacts and cooperation between Indian bar associations and ABA International at a level comparable to those already existing between ABA International and other non-U.S. bar associations;
Establish a framework for ongoing mutual contacts and cooperation between Indian legal institutions -- including the judiciary, law schools, and relevant ministries – and ABA International;
Exchange ideas and information regarding issues of mutual interest and concern;
Interact with members of the local and international legal community based in India;
Meet with current members and associate members of the ABA who are based in India;
Lay the groundwork for present and future joint events.
