Dear Members, What a great September we had with stellar successes in Europe - the ILEX Delegation to the Hague (the World’s Courthouse), and the 2008 Brussels Fall Meeting! With more than 600 participants from more than fifty countries, the Fall Meeting had over sixty substantive, world-class programs and an array of great evening events at exciting venues like the Belgian Parliament and the Palais de Justice. Distinguished speakers included Hans Corell, P. Nikiforos Diamondouros, Diana Wallis, Peter Hustinx, Peter Goldsmith, Boyden Gray, Robert Petit, David Crane and Imran Khan. Special thanks to our meeting co-chairs, Jean-Pierre Blumberg, Peter Callens and Nicole Van Ranst and all the exceptional speakers and program chairs who worked so hard to make this meeting our “best ever” Fall Meeting. Thanks to the committees of the Section for raising the standard of program excellence once again. Every single program was superb, and I would like to compliment each and every person who contributed to the meeting’s success. Immediately preceding the Brussels Meeting, our ILEX delegation of thirty lawyers sat in on the Charles Taylor trial and the Szrebenica war crimes trial, met privately with the presidents of the International Court of Justice, the International Criminal Court, the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia and its chief prosecutor, and with the Permanent Court of Arbitration, the US-Iran Claims Tribunal, and the Hague Conference on Private International Law. Special thanks to Daryl Mundis, who chaired this Hague ILEX trip - the level of meetings and substantive value of this trip surpassed its predecessors. For those who participated, whether in Brussels or The Hague, it is easy to understand why no other legal organization in the world comes close to the quality of our events, our programs, our speakers and, most of all, our members! And that was only September! We have lots more on tap this Fall. We keep setting new standards; we have for 130 years, and we’re not about to stop! On October 23rd, we will be hosting our ninth annual Live From the SEC. This is a program you won’t want to miss as you will hear right from the SEC its response to the current financial crisis. Confirmed speakers include... (Click to see list). For more details on this important program and registration information, check the calendar listing below. Then November 13-14, I hope you to see many of you in New York for our Special Anniversary Program Celebrating the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (see Policy Developments below).
