Section of International Law August 2008 E-Update

Aaron Schildhaus

Dear Members,

This ABA year marks the 130-year anniversary of the Section of International Law, which began its existence as one of the three original substantive committees of the American Bar Association.  This is also our 75th birthday as a Section of the ABA.

It is fitting that we should celebrate our “diamond year” immediately following our “Golden” year.  All of us bask in the glow of Jeff Golden’s term as Chair and his contributions to the noble history of our organization.  The good news is that Jeff has promised to stay involved and committed to our continued and central relevance to the field of international law.  Voila!  Our secret: not only Jeff, but his predecessors as Chairs, together with so many other dedicated members, have all remained extremely active and continue to contribute so much to our history and to our continuing successes.

The ABA Section of International Law, Leading the World’s International Lawyers since 1878 is the title of our new keepsake book, and I recommend it to all of you, for it’s a history that parallels world events and our Section’s involvement in them since our inception.  We can all be proud of our accomplishments over the years and of what we will continue to do in the years to come. Click here to learn more about this beautiful book and order your copy today.

ABA International is a powerful force in international law, with more than 22,000 individual members, over 60 superb, substantive committees, a dozen task forces, an unwavering commitment to excellence and most of all, service to our members and to the profession — all of you, the world of international lawyers.

Communications remain our hallmark. Our seasonal meetings are without peer; their programs are unmatched in their quality by any other organization anywhere.  Just click here and take a look at the program line-up for our Brussels Fall Meeting.  It doesn’t get any better.  And yet, our communications are not only in programs; they are in our world class publications, like The International Lawyer, including its comprehensive annual Year-in-Review edition, the best-selling books, the International Law News and over 25 committee newsletters.  Most of all, they are in our committees’ activities and discussions on-line.

Get the most out of your membership.  Join another committee or two (or three) today.  Do it on-line and do it now.  There’s no cost or obligation to join as many committees as you wish, and you’ll wish you had done it a long time ago.

Join me, and more than one thousand of our colleagues on September 24-28 in Brussels, where you can also stay and listen in on our Council Meeting — it’s free, it’s fascinating.  It’s an assemblage of the greatest international legal minds in the world today debating current global legal issues and helping to form the international policies of the ABA, the largest voluntary professional association in the world.

I welcome all our new officers and each of our members, and I look forward to another great year for the Section.

Aaron Schildhaus, Section Chair

POLICY DEVELOPMENTS:

The Section is proud to announce that its Associate Proposal Bylaw Amendment to the ABA Constitution and Bylaws was passed by the House of Delegates on Monday, August 12.  The new bylaw change will allow thousands of students at the college, university, and foreign status category to join the ABA and the Section for the same membership rate of $25 that domestic students currently enjoy.  The amendment is expected to take effect in the 2009–2010 membership year.

New Initiative from the International Legal Resource Center (ILRC)

The International Legal Resource Center (ILRC) is pleased to present its first of many E-bulletins regarding professional development opportunities for all who participate in United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) technical legal assistance projects through the ILRC.  Periodically, the ILRC will send information about trainings offered by the United Nations and other entities that focus on perfecting the skills needed in the international development arena. Expert credentials that include references to such trainings are likely to better match the requirements of UNDP short-term and long-term positions. We will also identify lectures or presentations on topics of interest to legal experts who have been contributing to this field for a while.  Please note that E-bulletins, in addition to our regular job postings, will be sent to those registered as legal experts with the ILRC.
