Description: The Legal Studies major prepares students for careers as legal assistants/paralegals by providing a liberal education and practical skills needed for success in this field. The Legal Studies program also provides its graduates with skills and knowledge necessary for study at law schools and other graduate programs. The program focuses on: mastery of substantive knowledge critical to the legal profession, including principles of legal ethics and restrictions on the unauthorized practice of law: 1. critical thinking; 2. mastery of basic investigative and legal research techniques; 3. proficiency in oral and written communication; and 4. development of professionalism and job-seeking skills.

Description: Lansing Community College is conveniently located in Lansing, MI, just blocks from the capitol building and state government. Two legal assistant (paralegal) program options are offered: the Associate Degree in Business and the Post-Baccalaureate Certificate. Students with no previous college can usually complete the associate degree curriculum in two years if they attend full-time. Because post-baccalaureate certificate students have already earned a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution, they usually can complete the requirements in one year, attending full-time. Both programs have been approved by the ABA since 1988.
