Formal Voluntary Pro Bono Program Characterized by a Referral System with a Coordinator
Description of Program
In Fall 2007, Professor and Clinical Director David Moss will launch an HIV/AIDS Pro Bono Project in which he will coordinate student and faculty volunteers to assist those needing legal assistance with issues relating to HIV/AIDS.In addition, we have several independent student-run pro bono projects, including projects run by the Student Board of Governors (the law school student government), the St. Thomas More Society, and the Hurricane Relief Network.
Location of Program
All pro bono programs are physically based within the law school. The programs primarily serve persons in the Detroit area, with the exception of the Hurricane Relief Network, which sent approximately 12 Wayne State law students to New Orleans in March 2007.
Staffing/Management/Oversight
The HIV/AIDS Pro Bono Project will be overseen by Professor Moss. The student-run projects are managed and overseen by the student groups.

The Pro Bono projects are self-funded.
Student Run Pro Bono Groups/Specialized Law Education Projects
At least three student groups (the Student Board of Governors, the St. Thomas More Society, and the Hurricane Relief Network) provide pro bono programs. In addition, Dean of Students Michele Miller runs a program in which law students teach about the law in Detroit high schools (for academic credit).
Faculty and Administrative Pro Bono
Wayne State Law School faculty provide pro bono assistance to a variety of groups, including the ACLU of Michigan, the NAACP, and Habitat for Humanity.
Awards/Recognition
Several faculty members have recently received awards or recognition for their pro bono work, including Associate Dean David A. Moran and Distinguished Professor Robert Sedler, both for their work with the ACLU of Michigan, and Professor John Mogk, for his work with Habitat for Humanity. Professor Janet Findlater was recognized in 2007 by the State Bar of Michigan for her pro bono work on behalf of foster children.
Community Service
Many students and faculty members perform community service for a variety of civic, religious, and charitable organizations.

Externships/Internships
The Judicial Internship program offers internships with judges, federal and state, trial and appellate. The Criminal Justice Internship program offers internships with prosecutors and public defenders, federal and state. The Civil Law Internship program offers internships with federal, state, and municipal government agencies, with public interest law offices, and with nonprofit organizations. The Practicum in Dispute Resolution offers internships with nonprofit mediation centers.

Public Interest Career Assistance
In 2007, the Law School announced the creation of the $3,100,000 Ziemba Scholarship Program, which will, beginning 2007-2008 provide approximately $150,000 annually in scholarships to students with a demonstrated commitment to careers in the public interest.

The Law School has exchange programs with the University of Maastricht in the Netherlands and Warwick University in England. Students selected for these programs pay tuition at Wayne State.
