Public Service Graduation Requirement Program
Description of Program
All students are required to take in their last year the course: Legal Aid Clinic (3 credits each semester). This is a live clinic course for low income clients. The 13 sessions including diverse topic, such as: Minors, Inmigration, Mediation, Gay LesbianIn addition, the school provides a voluntary and formal pro bono experience coordinated by a School official. The Enlace Program with students from public high schools adjacent to the UPR campus.
More recently the School has provided ample support to the pro bono services rendered by ANDA an Environmental Law Students Organization which has provided support and orientation to community environmental leaders from all parts of Puerto Rico.

Students enrolled in a summer internship course worked 20 hours weekly for 6 weeks and earned 2 credits. Placements included community development, environmental law and labor law initiatives. Two students did extensive field work outside San Juan.
Classes with a Public Service Component
Seminar: Law and Development – Aula Verde is a project for the development of economic strategies through nature and the environment in the midst of a public housing project with very high criminal incidence. Through this program former convicts are employed in a butterfly farm that serves as a community enterprise and receives visits from school children of adjacent communities. In 2004 Dean Rivera incorporated this project into the Law School curriculum as an applied research project with an accompanying two semester seminar with an initial enrollment of fourteen students.

Public Interest Career Assistance
Career counseling; educational activities; Annual Job Fair 50% participation of employers from the public sector; coordinated on campus visits of several public agencies; prepared and distributed to interest students and graduates a contact list of the main public interest employers in Puerto Rico; bought directories, fellowship manuals and other resources helpful in the job search process toward the public sector; implemented a School procedure for the nomination of students and graduates to the Presidential Management Fellow Program; provided information of U.S. job fairs (public employers); divulge information of summer internship, fellowships and job opportunities in Puerto Rico and United States.We received on campus visits of several government agencies.
