Formal Voluntary Pro Bono Program Characterized by a Referral System with a Coordinator
Description of Programs
The Pro Bono Outreach and Externships (PBOE) Director maintains a list of pro bono organizations and opportunities. Students select the pro bono activity that interests them and contacts the organization to volunteer. Students provide the PBOE Director with the name of the organization and the number of hours worked. The PBOE keeps track of the hours each student volunteers. Students with the most volunteer hours are recognized at graduation and celebrated during the academic year.

Faculty and staff are encouraged to volunteer for Pro Bono activities.
Professor Rapping is a 2009-2010 Fellow in the Wasserstein Public Interest Fellows Program at Harvard Law School and the Founder and Executive Director of the Southern Public Defender Training Center (SPDTC).
Professor Kathleen Burch received the ACLU’S 2009 Volunteer Attorney Award for her work with the Civil Liberties seminar.
Awards/Recognition
Students who volunteer at least 75 hours in a school year receive Pro Bono Distinction recognition. Graduating students in the top 10% of their class for total pro bono hours accumulated during their law school career receive the Excellence in Pro Bono Service award. The student with the highest overall pro bono hours receive the Chief Justice Leah Ward Sears Pro Bono Award.
Community Service
Students are encouraged to participate in community service by allowing such time to count towards their pro bono credit hours. However, in order to receive pro bono recognition, at least 50% of their total volunteer hours must be legal work that provides assistance to persons of limited means or with a non-profit legal services provider.
