Formal Voluntary Pro Bono Program Characterized by Administrative Support for Student Group Projects
Description of Programs
At Elon Law, the pro bono opportunities include: a) a large number of on-campus pro bono projects in which students provide assistance to clients in conjunction with established legal organizations or in student run programs; b) resources and assistance linking students to training and other pro bono projects in Greensboro; and c) collaborative student projects. Law School Faculty advise and support student projects such as the Elon Law Innocence Project and the Elon Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program. The Law School collects information regarding student pro bono work and reports it to the North Carolina Bar Association, nominating students for certificates of recognition upon completion of 75 hours of pro bono work. Each year, Elon Law nominates a graduating student who has shown an exemplary dedication to pro bono service to receive the North Carolina State Bar Pro Bono Student Award.

Staffing/Management/Oversight
The Pro Bono Program is supervised by the Assistant Dean for Student Affairs. Additionally, there is administrative support from an administrative assistant and student pro bono fellow. An Advisory Board will be created during the 2011-2012 academic year, and will be comprised of student project leaders and volunteers who will play an instrumental role in the programming and service centered community at Elon.
The Office of Career Services has a counselor who dedicates time to counseling students interested in public service positions.
Funding
Elon provides financial assistance to pro bono projects on an ad hoc basis. The Office of Student Affairs provides ongoing support to established projects and works with students, as well as non- profit legal providers, to develop new projects as interest and opportunities arise.

Faculty and Administrative Pro Bono
Faculty evaluation and promotion includes review of the faculty member's service to the School, the legal profession, and the community at large.
Awards/Recognition
Pro Bono Certificate of Recognition for graduating students who have completed 75 hours of Pro Bono during their law school career.
Pro Bono Award for graduating student who has made outstanding Pro Bono contributions during law school.
The David Gergen Award is given to a graduating student whose activities represent outstanding leadership and professionalism.
Community Service
Community outreach projects are made available through the Pro Bono program. The SBA hosts Blood Drives, food and clothing drives, and joins community efforts such as walk-a-thons and days of service on behalf of the United Way. Each year, the school sponsors “Elon Reaches Out”, a Day of Service which sends volunteers to various agencies/sites for service projects. Other projects featured on an ongoing basis include: Afterschool Care Project – students volunteer to work with children in first through eighth grades after school as academic tutors or mentors; collecting boxes of supplies for the troops, building Habitat houses, conducting breast cancer awareness days, sponsoring runs to fund brain cancer research, adopting families to provide gifts during the holidays, etc..
In addition, we are dedicated to building service and support programs in conjunction with our legal advocacy programs to best meet the needs of the community.
