Mission

The Energy Litigation Committee aims to provide its membership with up-to-date litigation-focused information on the production, transportation and marketing of oil, natural gas and electricity, as well as federal regulation of those industries. The Committee reports to members on significant case law, law review articles, and seminars and produces informative programs on topics of interest to the lawyer who litigates energy-related cases.

Message from the Chairs

Thank you for visiting the Energy Litigation Committee web page, a key resource for legal updates, committee activities, and timely news related to energy litigation. Energy—in all its forms—plays an important role in our life and raises challenging legal issues. From volatile gasoline prices, to offshore exploration and production in the Arctic, to the development of nuclear energy, coal, and natural gas, to the local and geopolitical impact of oil and gas shale developments, we find ourselves surrounded by complicated and important energy issues. The Energy Litigation Committee works to continue to provide content that lives up to the times in which we find ourselves. As we continue to progress through 2012, we have a number of benefits and programs of interest to our members.

CLE Seminar
In conjunction with the Insurance Litigation Committee, we will be presenting a panel at the Section of Litigation Annual Conference (April 18 –20, 2012) titled “Trying a Complex Case in a Sound Bite World.” The presentation will take place in Washington, D.C. on April 19, 2012. The presentation will explore how to present complicated facts in a succinct and simple fashion and will focus on a hypothetical shale gas exploration case that will touch on energy rights, land use, and insurance claims.

Section Annual Conference
The Section of Litigation will host its annual conference in Washington, D.C. April 18–20, 2012. We encourage you to attend and hope to see you there. The conference is the premier networking, learning, and business-development opportunity offered by the Section of Litigation. The Energy Litigation Committee will be present in full strength. Please join us.

Committee Networking Events
At the Section of Litigation Annual Conference, we will have several networking and business-development events for our members. We plan to host a dinner on Wednesday, April 18, 2012, for committee members. Please be on the lookout for additional details. Additionally, we will hold a business meeting for committee members to discuss plans for the remainder of the year and discuss plans for the upcoming bar year. Join us and help shape the future of the committee.

Joint CLE Program
As we have done in years past, we look forward to working again with the Institute for Energy Law to sponsor and promote the Annual Energy Litigation Conference held in Houston, Texas each fall. The conference serves as the premier gathering for energy practitioners in virtually all fields and attracts a large number of committee members. Energy Litigation Committee members receive discounted tuition to the conference, which has served as an informal social, networking, and business-development event for many of our members.

Webpage and Journal
Please, when you have a moment, visit our webpage for new content such as circuit-court updates, news updates, articles, and information about our subcommittees and how to increase your participation in the Energy Litigation Committee. We offer substantial networking, business-development, and publication opportunities for all of our members. Contact our webpage editor or our journal editors if you are interested in writing a news update or article for either of our award winning publications. The webpage and journal can publish legal updates and articles ranging from 750 to 2,500 words and we are always looking for fresh and innovative articles on energy topics.

Subcommittees
The chief reason that we are able to bring such outstanding opportunities to our committee members is the hard and dedicated work of the lawyers who lead our subcommittees. We invite you to review our list of subcommittees and hope that you will contact a subcommittee chair to become more involved.
