Pipeline Program: NAUDL and ALOUD

Urban Debate Leagues in High Schools

As part of our commitment to Pipeline Programs, the Minority Trial Lawyer Committee is partnering with the National Association for Urban Debate Leagues (NAUDL) and the Associated Leaders of Urban Debate (ALOUD). The NAUDL and ALOUD support Urban Debate Leagues serving predominantly minority high school students in urban school districts in several cities. More than 325 urban high schools and 50 urban middle schools are part of the Urban Debate Network, and the list is growing.

Academic debate develops core academic skills—reading comprehension, critical thinking, research, and communication skills—and studies show increased literacy scores, grades, and college matriculation rates for student participants. Urban debate helps young people discover the power of their own words and develop their ability to direct and change their lives through competitive, curricular and community debate.

Importantly, urban debate is a proven pipeline program, teaching minority students the skills and confidence they need to enter careers in the law.

The successes of Urban Debate Leagues have been heralded in the press.
