Message from the Chairs
Greetings! The Professional Liability Litigation Committee has more than 1,400 members litigating cutting-edge issues in claims against attorneys, accountants, directors, officers, and other professionals. We hope you will consider joining us.
The committee helps members stay informed on developing professional-liability trends. What are the ethical and liability risks posed by professionals’ use of social media? What claims are arising from hedge-fund failures, the continuing home-foreclosure saga, and law-firm breakups? Will courts begin to ignore the corporate structures of international accounting firms to assert jurisdiction over foreign branches? Will e-discovery errors become the new frontier of legal-malpractice claims? Through our newsletter, website, and frequent news and development pieces, the committee keeps its members up-to-date on cutting-edge professional-liability issues. We also expect to be providing podcasts and roundtable conference calls for our members in the coming year.
Among the committee’s biggest recent accomplishments is the publication of The Law of Lawyers’ Liability: A Fifty-State Survey of Legal Malpractice. This guide provides a state-by-state review of laws in each state pertaining to the laws of lawyer liability. Each chapter is devoted to the law of each state, written by lawyers in that particular state for easy comparison. Whether a lawyer is involved in litigating legal-malpractice actions or merely wants to understand more about these matters, this book is intended to serve as a resource to how the law varies state by state. Special thanks go out to our three editors, Merri Baldwin, Scott Bertschi, and Dylan Black, as well as to the authors of each state’s article. Also, thanks to past committee cochairs James Brown, George Kryder, and Paul Koning, for their leadership and hard work in bringing this project to fruition.
The committee also offers the chance to network and develop business with fellow professional-liability litigators from across the country. At the 2014 Section Annual Conference (SAC) in Scottsdale, Arizona in April 2014, the committee will have an informal cocktail gathering and a staff a table at the committee expo, and host a practice area and networking luncheon. If you are in Scottsdale for the SAC, please look us up.
We hope you will join us and get involved in sharing your knowledge and experience with other members. In particular, we are always looking for content—articles, news and developments, case notes, podcasts, commentaries, and program ideas—to post on our website or distribute electronically. If you are interested in submitting content, please contact our website editor Keith Bruett or newsletter subcommittee chair Patricia Gorham.
