All law firms today are reexamining their business model, the very foundation on which they were originally created. This requires a new look at the basic business equation,
P = R - E. Most firms are looking at the E, expenses, because they feel they have more control over this area, sometimes called “overhead.” Where most lawyers, however, fail is in the area of cash management. This isn’t even a P & L item, it’s a balance sheet item. That is, until the cash is not collected. Then, it becomes a P & L item of great magnitude.
Our presentation this month will focus on the cash, how to get it more quickly and how to make it work for you more effectively, including some tips on how cash management policies can actually impact client relations and improved revenue. This is a mouthful, and our speaker has been well-schooled in the effective leverage of cash. He has not only practiced law for 25 years and coached and consulted with lawyers and law firms for nearly 20 years since leaving the practice, he also owned and operated several manufacturing enterprises (he’s signed the payroll checks, perhaps the most important use of cash) and taught entrepreneurship for 30 years at the university level. No, he’s not the oldest man on earth, he’s our very own Ed Poll.
