Each summer, the American Bar Association membership assembles for its Annual Meeting. The Annual Meeting of the Law Student Division is also held at this time, providing an opportunity for Division members to meet at the national level.

This meeting promises you a unique opportunity to experience a diverse selection of the finest CLE available to law professionals. In addition to the Law Student Divisionís full schedule of events for law students, you are encouraged to take advantage of the educational programs sponsored by other ABA specialty Sections, Divisions and Forums which will allow you to meet and interact with law professionals from across the country. More information on these programs and opportunities will be provided as details become available.

  • How to Register: When you arrive in San Francisco, proceed to the main ABA Registration (Moscone Center West, 747 Howard Street, Exhibit Hall, Level 1) to register and obtain your official ABA Annual Meeting badge and materials.

You can still register online for the meeting and make hotel reservations. You also can register onsite at the meeting beginning Thursday, August 5 at the main ABA Registration Desk at the Moscone Center West (747 Howard Street, San Francisco, CA). Law Student Division Annual Meeting Programs and Activities

Annual Meeting Registration

Advance registrations were accepted through July 12, 2010 if you wished to have your name appear in the Advance Registration book distributed at the meeting. Additional registrations will be accepted online only. You also may register onsite at the meeting beginning Thursday, August 5 at the main ABA Registration Desk at the Moscone Center West (747 Howard Street, San Francisco, CA). Your registration fee includes admittance to the Career Fair and a Law Student "all access to CLE" meeting badge.

    $75 LSD Members/$100 Non-Member law students

*Note: The non-member registration fee includes a complimentary one-year membership in the ABA Law Student Division. You must be a JD candidate or recent graduate from an ABA-approved law school to receive a complimentary membership.

If you wish to make hotel reservations through the ABA, you must be pre-registered for the meeting. Requests and deposits for hotel reservations at an ABA-official Annual Meeting property must be received by Convention Data Services (CDS) no later than July 12. If you miss this deadline, you must wait until July 23 to make hotel reservations directly with the official ABA hotel of your choice; however, rates and availability cannot be guaranteed.

Upon arrival in San Francisco, all Annual Meeting attendees must first check in at the ABA Main Registration Desk at the Moscone Center West (747 Howard Street) to receive their official 2010 Annual Meeting registration badge and bag. You cannot register with the Law Student Division or attend the Career Fair until you have proof of registration (your official 2010 Annual Meeting badge) from the ABA’s main Registration Desk.

Career Fair Registration
Your Annual Meeting registration fee includes admittance to the Career Fair. There is not a separate registration or fee for law students to attend the Career Fair. However, you must be registered for the Annual Meeting and you must be wearing your official 2010 ABA Annual Meeting attendee badge that you receive at the ABA Main Registration Desk at the Moscone Center West (see check-in process) in order to gain entry to the Career Fair. Law Student Division Event Tickets
Once you have secured your ABA materials, please proceed to the Law Student Division Registration Area at the San Francisco Marriott Marquis Hotel (55 Fourth Street) to check-in and receive your Division materials including tickets to career development and leadership training luncheons, as supplies remain available.

ABA Event Tickets
To obtain tickets to ABA Special Events, you must be registered for the Annual Meeting. Tickets will be distributed or available for purchase in the ABA Main Registration Desk located at the Moscone Center West. Capacities for some events are limited and sold on a first-come, first-served bases until capacities fill. To ensure adequate time for processing, forms for advance purchase must be received by Monday, July 12, 2010. Tell me more

Annual Meeting Check-in Process

Once you've arrived at your first ABA Annual Meeting, what do you do? Let us help you navigate the registration process:

  1. Whether you have pre-registered or still need to register for the meeting, the first thing you will want to do is visit the Moscone Center West (747 Howard Street, San Francisco, CA 94103) to obtain your official registration badge, bag and master program book. Be sure that you receive a Law Student "All Access to CLE" badge, so you are able to take advantage of the free admittance to educational programs.
  2. Once you have secured your ABA materials from the Moscone Center West, you should proceed to the San Francisco Marriott Marquis Hotel (55 Fourth Street, San Francisco, CA 94103), to check-in with the Law Student Division. Here you will receive your Division meeting materials and your ticket to career development and leadership training luncheons (limited attendance available on a first-come, first served basis).
  3. If you will be serving as a Law Student Division Delegate (SBA President or ABA Representative), or a Delegate Proxy, once you have checked-in at the Law Student Division Registration Desk, you should proceed to the adjacent Delegate Certification Desk. If you are serving as a proxy, make sure you have your proxy letter with you (proxy instructions for the Annual Meeting will be posted shortly).

Assembly Reports and Resolutions

The Assembly is the Division's policy making body comprised of the ABA Representative and SBA President from each ABA-approved law school. Click on the link to the "Assembly Book" below for the agenda and resolutions under consideration for debate and vote including a resolution updating the Division's Bylaws.

Assembly, Delegate Certification and Proxies

The Assembly is the policy making body of the Division, which convenes only once a year during the Division’s portion of the ABA Annual Meeting. Members of the Assembly (Assembly Delegates) debate and vote on resolutions relating to legal education and the legal profession. Assembly Delegates also elect the Division’s three delegates to the ABA House of Delegates. (See Voting and Elections)

The Assembly membership is comprised of two principal delegates—the primary ABA Representative and the SBA President—from each ABA-approved law school. The principal delegates must be current ABA Law Student Division members, whose 2009-2010 dues are paid in full, in order to be certified as Assembly Delegates. A principal delegate who is not a member, but wishes to vote in the election and in the Assembly, must join the ABA and pay his/her dues in order to be certified. Otherwise, he/she may proxy his/her vote to another law student from his/her school, provided that law student is a fully paid member of the ABA Law Student Division. Proxies must present signed written authorization from the principal delegate, preferably on school letterhead, in order to be certified.

Voting and Elections

Only one SBA President and one ABA Representative from each ABA-approved law school shall be recognized as that school’s official delegate. Law schools with multiple SBA Presidents and/or ABA Representatives must determine who will serve as the primary delegates in the Assembly and during the elections. Principle delegates should be reported to the ABA Law Student Division through the SBA Presidents and ABA Representatives Reporting Forms.

Election of the Division Delegates to the ABA House of Delegates
Certified Assembly Delegates who wish to participate in the election of the three Division Delegates to the ABA House of Delegates should proceed to the Election Polling Table at the San Francisco Marriott Marquis Hotel between 2:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. on Friday, August 6 or from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 7. Certified Assembly Delegates must sign in with the election judges in order to receive a ballot. Certified Delegates may cast votes for up to three candidates. Polls will close promptly at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 7. Election results will be announced during the Assembly.

Election of the Division Vice Chair-SBA
Certified SBA Presidents or their proxies who wish to participate in the election of the 2010-2011 Division Vice Chair-Student Bar Associations (SBA) should attend the SBA Leadership Conference on Friday, August 6 from 8:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Certified SBA Presidents or their proxies will be required to sign in with the election judges in order to receive a ballot and cast their school’s vote for one Vice Chair-SBA candidate. Election polls will be open on Friday, August 6 from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Results will be announced during the Assembly on Saturday afternoon.

Flying Into San Francisco
San Francisco International Airport enjoys a picturesque location on the edge of the San Francisco Bay. Unfortunately, its lovely location is excessively prone to visitation by San Francisco's legendary fog. In fact, it can sometimes be the only place on the bay that's foggy. When visibility is reduced, SFO can only use one of its two runways and delays are the inevitable result. However, San Francisco visitors have alternatives to enduring potential delays, and they might even be less expensive too. Both Oakland and San Jose have airports within a reasonable distance of San Francisco and, depending on your travel itinerary, they are just as convenient as well.

Ground Transportation Between the Bay Area and San Francisco Airports
San Francisco International Airport is the primary hub servicing the Bay Area at which millions of people travel each year. As alternative options to crowds and potential fog delays, Oakland and San Jose have airports within a reasonable distance of San Francisco and, depending on your travel itinerary, they are equally as convenient

  • Oakland International Airport (OAK)
    Advertising itself as the Bay Area's Value Airport, Oakland Airport services most major carriers including Alaska Air, America West, Delta, Southwest and United. Located 25 miles from downtown San Francisco, Oakland is a good starting point if your trip includes Napa, Yosemite, Sequoia, Lake Tahoe or other points east of San Francisco. There are a number of shuttle services and other ground transportation options available to whisk you from Oakland Airport to San Francisco and back again. Tell me more
  • San Francisco International Airport (SFO)
    Located about 13 miles south of San Francisco on US Hwy 101, San Francisco International Airport (SFO) is a good starting point if your trip centers in the city. Funding

Due to the large expense involved in travel to the meeting, planning for the Annual Meeting must begin early. Attire

The ABA Law Student Division will be housed at the San Francisco Marriott Marquis Hotel, which is also serving as the overall Annual Meeting headquarters. As such, you will see and be seen by bench and bar members as well as high-level ABA officials, even during down time. Business professional attire (courtroom attire) is recommended for the following Annual Meeting events: Career Fair, Assembly and President’s Reception. Business casual is appropriate for other Annual Meeting events. Acceptable business casual attire includes neatly pressed khakis, dress slacks, cropped pants or skirts with shirts, polos or blouses. No jeans, t-shirts, beach sandals or other casual wear.

ABA Meeting Admittance Policy

The ABA promotes an open-meetings policy. Meetings and educational programs are open to Annual Meeting registrants. Some meetings and most educational programs are ticketed with an additional cost attached to them. ABA Law Student Division members registered for the Annual Meeting receive an “All Access CLE Badge” that allows complimentary admittance to educational events; however, any social events or those that include a meal function may require you to purchase a ticket.

Presidential CLE Center
The ABA Presidential CLE Centre, located at the Moscone Center West, offers accredited CLE programs covering all areas of practice. While general meeting attendees are required to pay for CLE events, law students registered for the Annual Meeting and wearing their official ABA Annual Meeting Law Student badge, generally are allowed complimentary admittance to educational events (you should be prepared to purchase a ticket for social events and meal functions). The ABA EXPO will be located at the Moscone Center West, from Thursday, August 5 through Saturday, August 7. The ABA EXPO features more than 100 providers of dynamic legal products and services.
