A Message from Your 12th Circuit Governor

Law students in the 12th Circuit (Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington) are invited to attend the ABA Law Student Division 2011 Spring Meeting and Governor Election on Saturday, February 19, 2011 at the Seattle University School of Law in Seattle, Washington. Join your fellow law students in a substantive discussion of law, leadership, and marketability.

There is no registration fee to attend this meeting yet just look at all the valuable opportunities available to you during the Spring Meeting:

  • Learn from practicing attorneys about how to thrive in the legal profession;
  • Cultivate your leadership skills through practical approaches and tips from other student leaders and experienced attorneys;
  • Learn about the scope and future of the profession and take home tips for finding your first legal job, internship or clerkship;
  • Take home valuable tips and strategies adjusting and thriving in the legal profession; and
  • Begin establishing relationships within the legal professionals with members of the bar from every practice setting, both veteran and new to the profession, that will prove invaluable to you not only now but in the future, and on a professional, and many times personal level. Many members have commented that the relationships they established during their time in the Law Student Division have resulted in lifetime friendships and professional collaborations.

As the recession grinds on, lawyers and law firms are struggling to make ends meet and bring in new clients. A growing number of attorneys are finding new ways of doing business. Registration

The 12th Circuit Spring Meeting and Governor Election will be held at Seattle University School of Law in Seattle, Washington on Saturday, February 19, 2011. The exact location of the meeting will be announced as soon as it is confirmed by the law school.

Advance Registration
Step 1: Complete the registration form no later than Friday, February 11, 2011. You will receive an automatic confirmation that your registration has been received. If you are unable to register by February 11, you may register on-site at the meeting. If you decide to register when you get to the meeting, please be sure to have your onsite registration form (posted after February 12) completed before you arrive and your ABA membership number readily available in order to expedite the process.

Step 2: Once you arrive at the meeting, you should stop at the registration table, (exact location to be announced) at Seattle University School of Law, to sign-in, pick-up your badges and a final schedule of events before proceeding to the meeting room. Registration for the meeting will open at 8:30am.

On-Site Registration
Meeting registration will open at 8:00am on Saturday, February 19, 2011 at Seattle University School of Law (exact location to be announced as soon as it is confirmed by the law school). Attendees should stop at the registration table to sign-in and pick up their badge and a final program.

If you are unable to complete the Advance Registration Form before the February 11 deadline, you may register on site at the meeting. To register at the meeting, please print out the onsite registration form (posted after February 12) and have it completed before you arrive in order to expedite the check-in procedure.

Making Travel Arrangements

The ABA Law Student Division 12th Circuit Spring Meeting and Elections will be held on Saturday, February 19, 2011 at Seattle University School of Law in Seattle, Washington.  When making your travel arrangements, ABA members are reminded to take advantage of their ABA membership benefits to obtain discounts on airfares, hotels and rental cars.

Hotel Accommodations
ABA Members are reminded to use their Member Advantage discount for Starwood Hotels, where available. The 12th Circuit non-residential leadership and Spring Meeting Planning Committee suggests you refer Seattle University's Visitors website for suggested hotel accommodations near the law school campus.

Voting and Elections

Election of the Circuit Governor:
Certified Delegates (SBA Presidents, ABA Representatives or their proxies) who wish to participate in the election of the 12th Circuit Governor must be certified in order to vote. Please check in with the ABA Law Student Division Election Proctor as soon as you arrive at the meeting in order to be certified. Election results will be announced at the conclusion of the meeting on Saturday.

Who Votes for the New Governor?
The primary ABA Representative and the SBA President (hereafter referred to as Delegates) from each ABA-approved law school who are current members in good standing of the ABA Law Student Division (a member in good standing is one who has paid his/her 2010-2011 ABA Law Student Division dues in full) are eligible for certification to participate in the election.  A principle delegate who is not an ABA Law Student Division member, but wishes to vote in the election must join the ABA in order to be certified to vote.  Otherwise, he/she may proxy his/her vote to another law student from his/her law school, provided that law student is a fully paid member of the ABA Law Student Division.  Proxies must present signed, written authorization from the principle delegate, preferably on school letterhead stationery, in order to be certified.  See complete proxy instructions

Sample Proxy Letter Language
I, {principle delegate’s full name}, {title: ABA Representative or SBA President} of the {full official name of law school} and a principal delegate in the Assembly of the American Bar Association Law Student Division, in accordance with ABA Law Student Division Governing Rules, hereby designate as my proxy {name of student to whom proxy is being given}, to cast my vote(s) at the 12th Circuit Spring Meeting and Governor Election, to be held on Saturday, February 19, 2011 at Seattle University School of Law in Seattle, Washington.

NOTE TO DELEGATES: In order to vote in the election, SBA Presidents, ABA Representatives or their proxies must be ABA Law Student Division members in good standing. An ABA member in good standing is one who has paid his/her 2010-2011 ABA Law Student Division dues in full. If you wish to join the ABA Law Student Division or bring your member status up-to-date, please visit MyABA or contact the ABA Service Center at 800.285.2221.

ABA Rep Funds

The ABA Law Student Division is unable to provide funding to law students for travel to the Spring Meeting.  However, ABA Representatives attending their Circuit’s Spring Meeting may request Rep Funds (if available) to offset some of their travel expenses.  Representative Funds are limited in size and all reimbursement requests are processed on a first-come, first- served basis.

To be eligible to receive Rep Funds to attend the Spring Meeting, you must be the primary ABA Representative at your school and the application must be received by the Secretary Treasurer and Division Director three weeks prior to the date of the Spring Meeting you are attending.  The amount of funding Representatives are eligible to request is based on available funds for your school.
