Letters to the 107th Congress

September 16, 2002

The Honorable Dave Camp
United States House of Representatives
137 Cannon House Office Building
Washington, D.C. 20515

Dear Representative Camp:

On behalf of the American Bar Association, I thank you for cosponsoring H.R. 1434, legislation that would reinstate and make permanent Section 120 of the Internal Revenue Code concerning the tax treatment of employer-paid legal services plans.

The ABA strongly supports group legal services plans as an effective means for helping ensure access to justice for low- and middle-income workers and believes that reinstating Section 120 of the tax code will encourage more employers to offer such benefits.

Attached is a copy of ABA President Alfred P. Carlton, Jr.'s letter to Chairman Thomas and Representative Rangel urging them to include H.R. 1434 in the chairman's mark of any appropriate tax bill being considered by the Ways and Means Committee. We hope you will also express your support to them. In addition, as things may move very quickly in the remaining days of this Congress, please be ready to weigh in with the Chairman, Representative Rangel and the House leadership should the Senate act first to reinstate Section 120 by communicating your support for the measure in any conference bill.

Thank you very much for your support. If you have any questions or need any assistance from us, please contact Julie Strandlie, Director, Grassroots Operations/Legislative Counsel, at (202) 662-1760.

Sincerely,

Robert D. Evans
Director, Governmental Affairs Office
