Letters to the 107th Congress

February 21, 2002

The Honorable Ernest F. Hollings
Chairman, Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice, State and Judiciary
Committee on Appropriations
125 Senate Russell Office Building
United States Senate
Washington, DC 20510

Dear Mr. Chairman:

On February 12, ABA President Robert Hirshon sent a letter urging you to support an appropriation of $13.55 million for the State Justice Institute (SJI) for FY 2003. I am writing to reiterate the Association's support for continued federal funding for SJI and to provide you with information on SJI grants in your state.

South Carolina, like the vast majority of states, has benefited directly from SJI grants and projects. The attached list, prepared by SJI and available on its website (www.statejustice.org), identifies $1,318,202.00 in grants and projects that have either been awarded to courts in your state or have benefited your state over the years. The list is demonstrative of the variety of ways in which SJI has been instrumental in assisting state courts across the country. You may wish to visit SJI's website to fully appreciate the breadth of activities and level of assistance provided by SJI.

The ABA hopes that you will vigorously support the Institute's FY 2003 request for an appropriation of $13.55 million. Please contact Denise Cardman, Senior Legislative Counsel, at 202/662-1760 if there is any way in which we can assist you.
