Asia-Pacific Anti-Corruption Conference Emphasizes Multi-Dimensional Approach

From September 28–29, 2011, Mary Greer, ABA Rule of Law Initiative (ABA ROLI) senior criminal law advisor, representing ABA ROLI’s regional anti-corruption advisor in Asia, attended the seventh conference of the Asia-Pacific anti-corruption initiative. The initiative is led by the Asian Development Bank and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, and it provides critical leadership and infrastructure to member countries to garner and target limited resources to address corruption. Third Annual Asia-Pacific Symposium Discusses Regional and Inter-Regional Corruption, Illicit Trade

Programs

Since September 2002, the ABA Rule of Law Initiative (ABA ROLI) has implemented a regional anti-corruption program in Asia with funding from the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs. The program is designed to assist signatories to the Anti-Corruption Action Plan for Asia/Pacific, which was developed by the Asian Development Bank and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. The plan focuses on taking specific priority steps to deter, prevent and combat corruption at all levels.

Our regional anti-corruption advisor, based in Bangkok, Thailand, provides technical assistance in support of anti-corruption efforts in selected countries and encourages coordination among existing anti-corruption activities.

Background

With funding from the U.S. Department of State through the Bureau for International Narcotics and Law Enforcement, in August 2002 the Asia Division initiated a program to assist and support signatories to the Anti-Corruption Action Plan for Asia/Pacific developed by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).

The Anti-Corruption Action Plan aims at taking concrete and meaningful priority steps to deter, prevent and combat corruption at all levels, without prejudice to existing international commitments and in accordance with each signatory own jurisdictional and other basic legal principles.

The Asia Division has placed a long-term regional anti-corruption advisor (RACA) in Bangkok, Thailand to implement this program, which focuses on providing technical assistance in support of anti-corruption implementation efforts in selected countries and building links among existing anti-corruption activities.

Meet Our Staff

Krishnamara

Chitvimol “Pae” Krishnamara joined the ABA Rule of Law Initiative’s Asia Division in November 2002 as a Program Assistant for the Regional Anti-Corruption Program based in Bangkok, providing logistical and administrative support not only for the RACA but frequently for international panelists and participants attending conferences held in Thailand and elsewhere in Asia.  These events have included a seminar held in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia in May 2005 and a regional conference on “The Role of Lawyers, The Bar, and The Bench in Preventing and Combating Corruption within the Justice System”, which saw lawyers and jurists from Asia, Europe and the United States gather in Bangkok in February 2007.
