Exchange Program Helps Strengthen Ties Between Vietnamese and American Lawyers
From May 22–31, the ABA Rule of Law Initiative (ABA ROLI) brought four U.S. delegates to participate in a nine-day study tour in Vietnam. A second phase of an exchange program supported by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, the tour was organized to strengthen the relationship between the U.S. and Vietnamese legal professions. Vietnam Bar Leaders Tour the United States
In July and August, the ABA Rule of Law Initiative (ABA ROLI) hosted a delegation of 12 Vietnamese officials, educators and lawyers for the first phase of a U.S.-Vietnam bar exchange program funded by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. The 28-day study tour was designed to support the development of a professionally skilled, civically engaged and ethical Vietnamese bar. Read more »»

Programs
Program activities under development include: substantive and skills training for providers of legal consultations to vulnerable groups; training of trainers workshops in teaching legal reasoning skills; capacity building support for national and local associations of lawyers; and a bar and legal education exchange program.

Background
In 2007, the ABA Rule of Law Initiative’s (ABA ROLI’s) Asia Division was awarded funding from the U.S. Department of State to implement a program to advance the rule of law in Vietnam. Under this program, the Asia Division will work in partnership with Vietnamese government institutions, law schools and lawyers associations on programs to improve legal education and training pedagogy, and to support institutional development of the legal profession. In 2008, ABA ROLI received funding from the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Exchanges and Cultural Affairs to implement a two-way exchange program to support mutual understanding and exchange of expertise between bar associations and legal educators.
