More than 400 Tajikistani Law Enforcement Officers Trained on Criminal Procedure Code
From June to November 2011, the ABA Rule of Law Initiative (ABA ROLI) trained 437 Tajikistani law enforcement officers on the country's Criminal Procedure Code (CPC). The nationwide trainings focused on increasing trainees' knowledge of the code, which was adopted in April 2010, and on equipping participants with the practical skills they need to better implement it. Belizean Police Prosecutors Trained in Trial Skills and Rules of Evidence
In most countries, when a uniformed police officer enters a criminal courtroom he does so as a witness. But in the small Central American country of Belize, police corporals, sergeants and inspectors also serve as prosecutors. This is a practice that Belize inherited from the British and although the United Kingdom has long abandoned the method, police prosecutors remain an integral part of Belize’s criminal justice system. Aspiring Tajikistani Journalists Trained in Investigative Reporting
To strengthen journalists’ role in providing accurate and comprehensive information about and increasing public awareness of the rule of law, the ABA Rule of Law Initiative (ABA ROLI) organized an October 31 to November 2, 2011 workshop on investigative reporting for 11 aspiring Tajikistani reporters. Ron Claiborne, weekend correspondent for ABC News' Good Morning America, and Tomasz Rolski, a television news producer, led the training that covered a range of topics, including journalistic ethics, reporting techniques and investigative reporting best practices. Mobile Courts in Congo
ABA ROLI’s mobile court program in the Democratic Republic of Congo was covered in several media outlets in November. In “On Rape’s Front Line,” the Times Live (South Africa) discusses our Open Society Institute for Southern Africa-funded access to justice program and how it combats impunity for rape crimes and offers counseling to rape survivors. The Economist cites that our mobile gender courts are both effective and a good value for the money in its November 26 piece, “Cosy club or sword of righteousness?”
