Morocco’s Anti-Corruption Agency Hosts High Profile International Events

In late October, the Instance Centrale de la Prevention de la Corruption (ICPC), Morocco’s anti-corruption agency, hosted two high profile anti-corruption events in Marrakech. More than 700 delegates from 80 countries attended the annual conference of the International Association of Anti-Corruption Agencies, while the Conference of State Parties of the United Nations Convention against Corruption drew representatives from dozens of international organizations and non-governmental organizations and was attended by nearly 2,000 delegates from more than 150 countries. Capacity-Building Program for Bahraini Judges, Lawyers and Prosecutors Launched

In 2011, the ABA Rule of Law Initiative (ABA ROLI) launched a program that continues previous work to build practical and professional skills among Bahraini judges, lawyers and prosecutors. Morocco Approves Landmark Witness and Whistleblower Protection Law

In early October, the Moroccan parliament passed a landmark law to protect trial witnesses and experts, as well as whistleblowers who report corruption. Working with Morocco’s Anti-Corruption Commission, l’Instance Centrale de Prévention de la Corruption (ICPC), the ABA Rule of Law Initiative (ABA ROLI) provided research assistance for this legislation, providing analogous legal codes from other countries in the region, and drafting and amending the initial text to produce the final law. D.C. Panel Highlights Morocco’s Constitutional Reform Efforts On July 13, the ABA Rule of Law Initiative (ABA ROLI) hosted a panel on constitutional reform in Morocco at its headquarters in Washington, D.C. Driss al Yazami, president of Morocco’s National Human Rights Council and a member of the constitution-revision advisory committee, which authored the recently adopted Moroccan constitution, and Saloua Karkri-Belkeziz, a Moroccan parliamentarian, offered remarks with commentary from Ambassador Aziz Mekouar, the representative from Morocco in the United States, and William Zartman, professor emeritus at Johns Hopkins University.
