Fourth Volume of Kosovo Judicial Reform Index Released
On January 17, the ABA Rule of Law Initiative (ABA ROLI) hosted an event to release the fourth volume of its Judicial Reform Index (JRI) for Kosovo. The release was timed with the country’s Law Day celebration, which prompted activities in Pristina and elsewhere in Kosovo. Read more »»
Civil Society-Focused Access to Justice Assessment Tool Launched
The ABA Rule of Law Initiative (ABA ROLI) recently launched a cross-regional program to help local civil society organizations address obstacles to access to justice. ABA ROLI has developed the Access to Justice Assessment Tool (AJAT), an analytical framework, accompanied by a training manual on research and writing skills, that helps civil society organizations to identify access to justice challenges and to design a context-appropriate reform program. ABA ROLI Publishes Assessments of the Moldovan Legal System
On December 22, 2009, the ABA Rule of Law Initiative (ABA ROLI) presented the findings of its Judicial Reform Index (JRI), Prosecutorial Reform Index (PRI) and Legal Profession Reform Index (LPRI) assessments for the Republic of Moldova. These reports—introduced to the public in a press conference at the Leogrand Hotel in Chisinau—analyze how much the Moldovan legal system conforms to international standards, assess legal reforms and identify the system’s strengths and weaknesses. Detention Procedure Assessment Tool to be Piloted in Armenia
The ABA Rule of Law Initiative (ABA ROLI) recently completed the methodology for its latest legal assessment tool, the Detention Procedure Assessment Tool (DPAT). The new tool, which will be piloted in Armenia in February 2010, encompasses both pretrial detention and sentencing, and evaluates legal frameworks, procedures and practice in light of international standards. This enables a comprehensive legal and factual analysis that identifies strengths and weaknesses and guides future rule of law programming. Read more »»
Judicial Reform Index Released in Albania
On April 10, the ABA Rule of Law Initiative (ABA ROLI) released the fourth volume of the Judicial Reform Index (JRI) for Albania at the Magistrates’ School in Tirana. The release event, which featured presentations by High Court Judge Arjana Fullani, U.S. Agency for International Development Albania Mission Director Roberta Mahoney and ABA ROLI assessor Kathy Ladun, was broadcast on major Albanian radio and television stations. Voter Registration Chapter Penned by ABA ROLI Experts
American Bar Association Rule of Law Initiative (ABA ROLI) Deputy Director Michael Maya and Legal Analyst Brie Allen, who works for ABA ROLI’s Research and Assessments Office, co-authored a chapter on voter registration in the recently published book, International Election Principles: Democracy and the Rule of Law. Georgia Legal Profession Reform Index Highlights Rapid Changes and New Challenges
The Georgia LPRI Volume II assesses the state of the legal profession in Georgia as of November 2007. It is based on a series of 24 factors that address a wide range of issues including professional freedoms and guarantees education, training, and admission to the legal profession and conditions and standards of practice. The LPRI's findings highlight the rapid changes that are taking place within the legal profession in that country. Read more »»
New Legal Ethics Handbook for Kosovo’s Law Students
The ABA Rule of Law Initiative has published the first Ethics Handbook for Kosovo Law Students. The publication is intended to be used by law faculty professors, students, and experts engaged in ABA ROLI’s Legal Clinics. The Handbook also includes A Survey of Ethics in the Legal Professions; Hypothetical Legal Ethical Dilemmas; and a Mock Trial Case Involving Legal Ethics and Ethical Dilemmas. Read more »»
Third Judicial Reform Index Launched in Kosovo
On March 12, 2008, the ABA Rule of Law Initiative hosted an event introducing the third volume of the Kosovo Judicial Reform Index. Approximately 150 representatives from the government, media, international community, and non-governmental organizations attended the event. Read more »»
