Two Legal Aid Networks Launched in Russia

I n March, the ABA Rule of Law Initiative, through its U.S. Agency for International Development-funded Rule of Law Partnership Project, launched two legal aid networks in Russia. The networks—one in Ulyanovsk Region and the other in Leningrad Region—were launched in partnership with regional governmental and non-governmental organizations. Staffed with local attorneys, the legal aid centers offer pro bono in-person and telephone legal consultations and referrals to underprivileged populations. The centers have already helped increase residents’ access to justice. Read more »»

F ollowing Mexico’s 2008 approval of constitutional amendments, nine of its 32 states—Baja California, Chihuahua, Durango, Estado de México, Morelos, Nuevo Leon, Oaxaca, Yucatán and Zacatecas—have begun the transition from an inquisitorial criminal justice system to an oral, accusatorial one. Liberian Program Supports Unified Curriculum and Course Materials

L ate last year, the ABA Rule of Law Initiative (ABA ROLI), with support from the U.S. Agency for International Development and in partnership with the Louis Arthur Grimes School of Law, initiated a program to support law professors’ professionalism. The faculty fellowship program provides faculty—all of whom work part-time at the law school—additional compensation and technical assistance to develop instruction materials, unified curriculum and effective teaching methodologies.
