Chinese Legislators, Advocates Examine Domestic Violence Legislation and Its Implementation in the U.S.

From November 8–16, 2011, the ABA Rule of Law Initiative (ABA ROLI), in partnership with UNICEF, brought a 10-person Chinese delegation on a study tour to Washington, DC, and Boston, Massachusetts. The tour focused on combating domestic violence through legislation and coordinated community response. Participants included scholars, advocates, judges and experts from China’s National People’s Congress and Women’s Federation.

In 2002, as I was looking forward to my life post-retirement from my job as General Counsel of a large multi-national company, and several friends who had contacts with ABA CEELI (the predecessor of ABA ROLI) suggested that an assignment might be the right next step for me. After meeting with headquarters staff in Washington, I decided that volunteering offered a unique opportunity for me to combine my professional experience and contribute in some meaningful way to the alleviation of poverty and the promotion of human rights and the rule of law in the developing world. Asia-Pacific Anti-Corruption Conference Emphasizes Multi-Dimensional Approach

F rom September 28–29, 2011, Mary Greer, ABA Rule of Law Initiative (ABA ROLI) senior criminal law advisor, representing ABA ROLI’s regional anti-corruption advisor in Asia, attended the seventh conference of the Asia-Pacific anti-corruption initiative. The initiative is led by the Asian Development Bank and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, and it provides critical leadership and infrastructure to member countries to garner and target limited resources to address corruption.

More than 400 Tajikistani Law Enforcement Officers Trained on Criminal Procedure Code

F rom June to November 2011, the ABA Rule of Law Initiative (ABA ROLI) trained 437 Tajikistani law enforcement officers on the country's Criminal Procedure Code (CPC). The nationwide trainings focused on increasing trainees' knowledge of the code, which was adopted in April 2010, and on equipping participants with the practical skills they need to better implement it.

Libertas Releases Findings of its Study of Post-Election Disputes

I n anticipation of disputes related to the first nationwide automated elections in 2010 in Philippines, the ABA Rule of Law Initiative (ABA ROLI), through its subgrantee Libertas, worked with courts to prepare judges for potential litigation, including by developing a primer for judges and lawyers on the automated election rules. Following the elections, Libertas conducted year-long study of election litigation, analyzing how courts and lawyers confronted the legal issues surrounding automated elections. Click to read more »

Street Law Program Helps Unite Multi-Ethnic Communities

G ulipa Kozhogulova is a resident of Yuzhny neighborhood in the southern city of Osh, Kyrgyzstan. A retired artist and chair of the Female Council of her neighborhood, she is fully engaged in raising her grandchildren. Her neighborhood is a community of low-income families with some daunting challenges. Over the years, playgrounds, a staple of youth, have been disappearing from the neighborhood, depriving local children of an area to play and fomenting delinquency among them.
