Chinese Environmental NGOs Coordinate to Hone Advocacy Strategies

F rom September 22–23, the ABA Rule of Law Initiative (ABA ROLI) and the China Association for Non-Governmental Organization Cooperation (CANGO) convened a coalition of grassroots environmental NGOs in Beijing to discuss various policy advocacy strategies to promote environmental health. More than 25 environmental NGO representatives from several parts of the country, including Anhui, Henan, Yunnan, Hebei, Sichuan, Hubei, Heilongjiang and Jiangsu provinces, were in attendance. A s part of its efforts to defend and promote women’s rights in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the ABA Rule of Law Initiative (ABA ROLI) promotes a better understanding of and support for women’s rights through trainings for health care professionals, female leaders of community organizations and judicial police officers. Speaking of the impact of a training ABA ROLI provided from June 7–9, in Kavumu, South Kivu Province, Mirindi, a police commander in the town of Kalehe, said, “I am committing myself to putting into people’s heads that women must be respected. I practice this at home with my wife, and I promote this within my jurisdiction.”

T o ensure that the process runs smoothly, the Tunisian Bar Association (TBA) has published and election law handbook for lawyers and established a rapid response helpline to respond to elections-related concerns. The TBA, with support from the ABA Rule of Law Initiative, trained local attorneys to provide legal services related to the elections.
