Letter From the Chair

In November 2010, the International Committee will be sponsoring seminars in Korea and Japan in conjunction with the American Board of Trial Advocacy (ABOTA). The seminar in Seoul will take place on November 15th and 16th and the Tokyo program will take place on November 18th and 19th. The presentations will focus on the challenges that Japanese and Korean companies face when dealing with litigation in the United States. The ABOTA portion of the programs will offer an abbreviated version of their Masters in Trial Advocacy. The presentation in Tokyo will be held at Nihon University College of Law with the assistance of Professor Fukuda (Vice Chair of TIPS International Law Committee) and Professor Sakamoto. The presentation in Seoul will also be held at a University law school. For more information, please contact Co-Chair John McMeekin or Michele Powers .

We are excited to announce that TIPS has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with the Union Internationale des Advocats (UIA). The UIA is a global legal association devoted to international law and through a wide range of meetings, seminars, law courses and advocacy, promotes professional cooperation and friendship among legal professionals around the world. We look forward to co-sponsoring international programs with the UIA.

On March 3-4, 2011, the International Committee will co-sponsor with the Israel Bar Association a one and one-half day CLE program in Jerusalem, Israel. In November 2010, we produced programs in Korea and Japan. In March 2011, we will be producing a multi-topic program in conjunction with the Israel Bar Association in Jerusalem, Israel. Our members regularly publish on a variety of topics in our newsletter and other TIPS and non-TIPS publications. We hope to publish three to four newsletters in the next year and would also like to plan and produce teleconference/webcast CLE programs on topics of international interest.

The program will bring together leading attorneys and judges from North America and Israel. Among the program speakers are Canadian Supreme Court Justice Rosalie Abella Silberman, California Supreme Court Justice Daniel Weinstein (Ret.) and D&O expert Kevin LaCroix. The program will address numerous issues including recent trends and developments in litigating Israeli and U.S. cases, consumer product safety and liability, executive liability arising from transnational operations and global business transactions, employment liability in the context of social and legal transcultural issues, security considerations in cyberspace and international commerce, intellectual property rights in the context on international transactions and technology transfers and international dispute resolution and choice of forum. For additional information about the program and sponsorship opportunities please contact Nathaly Vermette, Matt Schiff or Perry Granof.
