LIFE INSURANCE LAW COMMITTEE

Focused on the existing and changing relationships among insureds, annuitants, contract owners, beneficiaries, agents, brokers and life insurance companies. This committee examines the contracts and laws affecting those relationships as well as the external developments that impact them and employment retirement plans.

Letter From the Chair

Thank you for visiting the Life Insurance Law Committee website! It is another busy year for the Committee, as we continue to work hard to bring you information on developments relevant to the life insurance industry.

We just completed the 37th Annual Mid-Winter Symposium, held at the Eden Roc Resort and Spa in Miami Beach, FL, January 13-15, 2011. The Life Insurance Law Committee again served as the host committee of the program, which presented topics of interest to in-house, government, and outside counsel practicing in the areas of life, health and disability insurance law, ERISA, insurance regulation, and reinsurance. The program included a number of “plenary sessions” for all attendees, plus a series of “breakout sessions,” giving attendees the opportunity to choose programs within their particular area of interest.

Topics specific to life insurance included plenary sessions on the proliferation of life insurance class actions and strategies for defending against them, and an update on the ever-interesting area of accidental death and dismemberment litigation. Planning is already underway for the 2012 Symposium. If you have ideas for programs or wish to be involved, please contact Chair Elect, Matthew Shorey, who will be the next Program Chair.

In addition to producing dynamic CLE programs and keeping you informed of the latest happenings and trends in life insurance law through articles in our newsletter (many thanks to our Editors, Natalie Furniss and Tina Allaire), we have also been busy making plans to ensure the continued value and success of our Committee via Strategic Planning process. Please join us as we work to build our ranks of corporate counsel and plaintiffs’ lawyers, so that our committee continues to bring together counsel from all sides – corporate counsel, plaintiffs’ counsel, defense counsel, trade association, and governmental and regulatory counsel. The TIPS programs stand out because they offer unique opportunities for discourse among counsel with different perspectives.

It is a pleasure serving as Chair of the Life Insurance Law Committee. I hope you find the Committee’s offerings to be of value to you. If you are not already a member, please consider joining us. Give a call or send me an email to learn more about how membership in the Life Insurance Law Committee can benefit you.
